Favors the Amendment Exempting
$3,000 of Assessed Value-of
Texas Homesteads.
Brady W. Steele filed his name
for tax assessor of Harris County
Wednesday and simultaneously an-
nounced that he strongly favored
the proposed constitutional amend-
ment which would exempt $3000 of
the assessed value of all residence
homesteads from all taxation for
State purposes.
Hundreds of small home owners
in Harris County favor this meas-
ure, which is known as house joint
resolution No. 0, article’ 8, section
1-a, and which will be voted upon
next November, Mr. Steele said.
“Since I announced my candi-
dacy for this office several weeks
ago I have visited practically every
section of the county and talked
with these small home owners,^Mr.
Steele said.

suits, the report showed.
‘I think that the whole depart-
ment should be reorganized and
the property of Harris County
equally assessed so that no one car-
ries more than his share of prop-
erty expense. There is no excuse
for such an enormous number of
errors to be carried on the tax
rolls of this county.”
Mr. Steele said he plans to con-
duct a very active campaign for the
office of Tax Assessor of Harris
County. ‘

D. A. S. Wins Again.
Behind the pitching of Ivan
Adels, star twirler of the league
leading D. A. S. team, the frat boys
overwhelmed the A. Z. A. frater-
nity by the score of 9 to 1.
Every player but Meyer and
Asher collected at least one hit for
the winers. Sacks led the losers
with two bingles.
Playing errorless baseball, the
D. A. S. tossers completed one dou-
ble play and a triple play to'pull
Adels out of some tight places.

Mrs. Schechter to Address
Congregation.
Mothers’ Day will be observed at
the Adath Yeshurun Synagogue on
Friday evening, May 6, at 8:15
o’clock. An interesting program has
been arranged by Dr. Abraham I.
Schechter. The Adath Yeshurun
Sisterhood will decorate the Syna-
gogue, and present all mothers who
attend the services with flowers.
The Sunday School teachers will be
at the doors of the Synagogue to
greet the mothers, and present
them with flowers.
The Hebrew services, as well as
the invocation and closing prayers,
will be recited by pupils of the
Hebrew and Sunday schools. Rabbi
Schechter will have as the topic of
his sermon: “Practical Judaism in
the Home.” Mrs. Ben F. Leff, vice
president of the Sisterhood, will
present Mrs. Abraham I. Schech-
ter, who will speak on “Our Moth-
ers: An Appreciation.”
Mrs. Harry H. Maltz, president
of the Sisterhood, announces that
refreshments will be -served after
the services, through the courtesy
of the Sisterhood.
All members and friends of the
congregation, and especially the
mothers of the Sunday school pu-
pils, are cordially invited to attend
the services.

“Of course, I would not favor
any amendment which might result
in a higher tax rate, but I am sure
that the State can work out several
plans in regard to distribution of
certain luxury taxes which would
offset the decrease in income which
would result if such a measure was
approved.”
Many of the citizens of Harris
County living in modest cottages
and bungalows are barely making
a living, the candidate continued.
“Half of them are practically
out of work. I have found every
one of them in favor of this amend-
ment which would relieve them of
part of a burden that now threat-
ens to take their very homes from
them.
“Sufficient funds could be taken
from the gasoline tax, cigarette tax
and other special luxury taxes
levied recently upon the citizens of
Texas which would make up the
difference in income to the State.”
Recent investigations made by
Mr. Steele in the business of as-
sessing Harris County property has
divulged an enormous number of
amazing discrepancies and errors,
he said.
“In the assistant district attor-
ney’s report to the Harris County
Commissioners’ Court, April 15,
this deplorable condition was clear-
Jy brought out. The district Attor-

Coming from behind in the last
innings of play, the M. M. No. 1
team defeated the M. M. No. 2
team to the tune of 7 to 2.
Maurice Dushkin, center fielder
of the No. 2 boys, collected two
hits, which were the only hits col-
