The only thought was that of

Today, we seem to be more

“Communism is inseparable
from national independence, and
a threat against Israel s inde-
pendence is a threat against the
Israel Communist Partv." Fol-
lowing the party's split two years
ago into separate Jewish and
Arab sections, the paper and its
editor now represent the Jewish
wing of the parts
about Judaism to non-Jewish
groups. There is also an in-
crease in the number of non-
Jewish groups which want to
visit synagogues and Jewish
worship. services.
It seems to me that Judaism
should think very seriously and
positively about disseminating
material so that those who may-
desire to enter Judaism will be-
come acquainted with the proc-
ess and procedure. During my
visits with non-Jewish groups,
I frequently am asked about
this procedure, about whether
Judaism is open to all people,
and about the requirements for
conversion.
I am not advocating active
missionary work such as is un-
dertaken by various Christian
groups. We have seen that, for
one reason or another, the long-
range results have not lived up
to original hopes.
However, I am of the opin-
ion that Judaism is the best re-
ligious way of life for twentieth
century man. I am most proud
of what Judaism has to say
and what it has to offer to a
human being. When one has a
product or an idea which he
thinks is worthwhile and of
value, he attempts to exhort its
value to others so that they may
partake of it. Thus it is time
that we Jews publicly proclaim
the tenets of our faith for those
who desire to come and par-
take!
CARLOS ISRAEL NEW
PRESIDENT OF H.I.A.S.
New York, (JTA)—Carlos
L. Israels, a leader in philan-
thropic activities for more than
30 years, was elected president
of United Hias Service, the
worldwide Jewish migration
agency, it was announced at
the organization's headquarters.
Author, lecturer on corporate
and financial law, and Adjunct
Professor of Law at Columbia
University, Mr. Israels is a
member of a New York law
firm. He was previously presi-
dent of United Hias in 1958-59
and has been associate chair-
man of the Board since then.
He succeeds Murray I. Gurfein,
who served as president since
1960. Mr. Gurfein was elected
chairman of the executive com-
mittee. Ben Touster, a former
president of the Hias, was re-
elected associate chairman of
the Board.
Mr. Israel is active in many-
civic, professional and philan-
thropic organizations. He is a
“Founder" and member of the
exective committee of the New
York UJA; a member of the
Board of Directors of JDC, and
a director and Treasurer of the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds. He is con-
sidered a leading authority on
corporate law, having written:
“Corporate Practice" and

should actively seek converts?"
“What could be worse?" “Don’t
we all know that Judaism is
against this?” “Our faith is not
in favor of this.’
If we look at our tradition
we shall see that conversions
were occuring as early as Bibli-
cal days. Proselytes are discuss-
ed quite openly and favorably
in the Pentateuch. Such was
the situation in post-Biblical
days, too. In fact, Josephus
intimates that there was great
interest in Judaism during his
day. Because of prohibitions of
the Emperor Constantine and
then the Councils of Orleans,
conversions began a decline.
