"We, members of the Houston Rabbinical As
sociation, declare the month of Adar 1 5736
(February 1976) to be United Jewish Campaign
month. We call upon every member of the Jewish
Community to make the most generous gift
possible to the United Jewish Campaign.
We recognize that such a gift constitutes a religious
act and we further affirm that the United Jewish
Campaign is a reflection of the finest in Jewish
tradition — a concrete expressicAt of our concern
for the welfare of our people."
Joel I. Spira, Chairman of the United Jewish Campaign
stated, "This very impressive action by our Rabbis is not
only unprecedented, but clearly underscores the centrality
of our Synagogues and Temples in Jewish life. Their action
also reflects how deeply our religious leaders understand
the needs of our people everywhere, and the importance
of a successful Campaign. Further, this resolution demon-
strates that Houston is creatively in the forefront of
communal relationships between our religious institutions
and the Jewish Community Council!
Each of our Rabbis is moving to implement the resolu-
tion by designating one Shabbat during February as United
Jewish Campaign Sabbath. They are also taking steps to
further the Campaign among their respective congregations.
We are most gratified by this significant action.”
United Jewish Campaign Sabbath will be observed as
