acids that are necessary for health
and growth. To supply this, most
vegetarians allow the use of mille
and eggs. *■ ■
Other disadvantages of a vegeta-
ble diet are, first. Its bulkiness. This
is especially true if all the protein
necessary is obtained from vegeta-
bles. If dried lentils are used to
make tip our protein,' It would re-
quire about 450 grams fo supply the
total daily requirement, and even
more Is necessary on account of the
large amount of vegetable protein
that is not absorbed. The effect of
excessive bllk is to put an unneces-
sary strain on the stomach and in-
testines. and freqnentty to cause
colitis, distention, etc. This in so ee-
dent that in Ireland the miekname,
"potato helly", was given to the
peasants' who subsisted entirety, on
potatoes, and (he disnroportionnte
abdominal development of cattle and
other herbivore testifies to the same
fact. .2
.When it comes to the relative cost
of animal and vegetable foods, the
vegetarian is 6b much firmet ground.
Thore la no doubt that vegetable food
is cheapen ...
The sedentary worker is partten-
larls likely to'be a bad vegetarian. ;
because with- his comparatively en-
reebled digestion he 1a pot under con.
stdlerable strain-In handling the more
bulky vegetable diet. In fort, among "
town dwehees and sedentary work-
ers. generally, vegetarianism seldom
has been a .success. probably partly
because of the poor appetite of this
lass of people, The Inclusion of
meat Inorenses, tlie appetite and-
makes the meal more tasty.
