- Despite the number of complaints, both grumbled and formal, that
are voiced each year over everything from campus security to the
food services, students have made it clear that St. Mary’s is a good
school to attend. In fact, St. Mary’s has a very good university
atmosphere compared to other schools throughout the nation.
The results of the American College Testing Student Opinion
Survey, which were recently released, have University administra-
tors ecstatic over students’ responses. These results obviously
reflect the quality of the University in terms of personnel and
services, which have been shown to be more than satisfactory.
The public relations department will undoubtedly take this
valuable information and use it for all it’s worth. They should. The
recruiting power of this survey is tremendous, since ACT’s
reputation as a respected institution lends much viability to the
results. Furthermore, students believe that the accuracy of
information about St. Mary’s received before enrolling and the
quality of the school’s catalog and admissions publications are far
better than average. Indeed, Public Relations has every reason to be
pleased.
The highest ratings were given to the student voice in campus
policies, rules concerning student conduct, rules regulating the
residence halls, and religious activities. This reflects a
commendable feat through the efforts of Student Services. Notable
among them are the Student Government Association, the Office of
Housing and Student Life, and Campus Ministry. Dissatisfaction
with student government took a downward plunge this year,
reflecting the trend toward greater student participation in
University administration.
We at The Rattler are also pleased. Student satisfaction with
cmpus media has increased since last year.
.'Those areas still needing improvement are already under
investigation, and by next year we should see more favorable
ratings.
A warm congratulations for a commendable job is due to the entire
University.
At last Thursday’s SGA meeting, Mr. Robert Showers, University
Comptroller, Mr. Harvey Legate, Bursar, and Mr. Richard Yerly,
Assistant Bursar, addressed the members and answered questions
concerning the billing procedures and other topics dealing with the
financial operations.
It was suggested to these administrators that a committee of
students sit down with them to discuss at length some possible
changes or corrections. The SGA, which has a committee that
Oversees the Business Office, Bookstore, and billing procedures, will
hold a meeting in the next several weeks to address these important
ipsues. We will keep you informed.
Z In other committe news, the Academic Committee is looking into
the possibility of establishing a December graduation ceremony.
The SGA strongly supports this idea, and the possibility exists.
- The Library Committee announced that the library will again be
open longer during finals week. Also, the library is planning to have
coffee available during that time.
2 The Housing Committee announced that the rates for dorm rooms
for next year will be disclosed in three weeks. The Counseling
Center Committee announced that a speaker will be coming to
dampus and holding several workshops dealing with career
preparation. There will be more news forthcoming on this.
j At this Thursday’s meeting, Mr. Bruce Davis, Director of ARA
Food Service, will be present to address students’ questions,
complaints, and concerns regarding the food service here in the cafe
and SUB. Interested students are encouraged to attend.
' Finally, in the area of programming, the SGPA will be presenting
folk singer Barry Drake on Thursday, Feb. 16 in the SUB at 9:30 p.m.
i On Thursday, Feb. 23, direct from New York, Steve Moore will
appear as a presentation of the SGPA. Moore is a comic
extraordinaire. He will perform a 90 minute show which promises to
leave everyone laughing. We encourage everyone to make plans to
join us.
