In honor of the recent Papal visit,
VITSA/CTSA, channel 36, aired,
"Two Noble Men—Two Victims of
Terror." This program focused on the
terror both Pope John Paul II and
Raoul Wallenberg have encountered.
Mike Davis, Vice-President of
Oblate School of Theology hosted the
program which featured Professor
Oscar Rechtschaffen, chairperson of
the Public Justice department at St.
Mary's University.
Rechtschaffen, who pioneered one
of the first comprehensive university
courses in terrorism, discussed the
terror which Pope John Paul II and
Wallenberg have endured. The Pope
survived an assasination attempt, plus

The St. Mary's Learning
Assistance Center (LAC) has begun a
Writing Center for students to get
help with their writing on a first-
come, first-serve basis.
The center is not a proof-reading
service, but will help students invent,
organize and develop ideas; revise and
edit drafts; and guide towards a
finished paper. The center is staffed
by teachers of writing and advanced
writing students.
Although the center has just
become a reality this year, its concept
has been in the works for a long time.
Filomeno Maldonade, director of
the LAC, says that the "idea of the
writing center has always existed, ever
since the LAC began, and now it is
beginning to evolve."

camp there. Wallenberg saved over
one hundred thousand men, women,
and children from death. Among the
things he did for the Jews include
setting up protective housing and
issuing protective passports to them.
In 1945, the Russian Army liberated
Budapest and took Wallenberg into
"protective" custody. Since that time
he not been seen as a free man.
The Russian government in 1957
informed Sweden that Wallenberrg had
died of a heart attack in July, 1947.
Testimonies from returning prisioners
of war, however, contradict that
statement.
Other channels have reported
Wallenberg as sill alive. Moscow
never explained why they had seized
Wallenberg. Prisioners have reported
that he was accused of being an anti-
Soviet spy.

Patterson.
As campus ambassador, Patterson
and other students make a
committment to helping the world's
suffering children by organizing fund
raisers and, in Patterson's case, a
dance.
"This is a service not only to our
community but also to help children
all over the world. Every little bit
really does help, and I’m really excited
about all the coorperation I've been
receiving, both on campus and city
wide," said Patterson.
The dance is co-sponsored by
Coca-Cola, Fiesta Balloons,
Budweiser and the following campus
organizations: Beta Sigma Phi,
Alpha Sigma Tau, Rho Beta Gamma,
Sigma Phi Epsilon, Chi Phi, Circle
K, and Black Student Union.
teacher here St Mary's. Biasiolli
comes to St. Mary's from Trinity
University where she was also
involved with their writing center.
Maldonado and Biasiolli have long-
term goals when it comes to the
writing center. "As the writing center
is now, it is only the beginning of a
wonderful dream," Maldonado says.
Eventually the LAC will become
the Writing Center, with more space,
equipment and staff. Although the
name of the LAC will change, peer-
tutoring for all subjects will still be a
service offered. Already in the
works for Fall, 1988, the center will
expand it's walls outward in order to
accomodate the constant overflow of
students.
The LAC is also considering
additional services such as:
diagnostic, proficiency, and
fundamental-area testing; professional
proofreading service for faculty
articles and papers; and release-time
faculty staffing the writing center.
