Jorge-Mendoza-Powell proved that in addition to this talent of
autoracing, his skill in the martial arts is impressive as well. Mendoza-
Powell took first place in his division at the St. Francis Academy Karate
Tournament, January 9.
Mendoza-Powell defeated both of his opponents, thus capturing first
place in the heavyweight division as an intermediate-level competitor.
After only two years of karate experience, Mendoza-Powell has over
25 tournaments under his belt. He says that it was the movie star/karate
hero, Bruce Lee, who sparked his interest in martial arts. Mendoza-
Powell entered Omega Karate Studio at a friend’s suggestion, and has
since developed his talent under Omega Chief Instructor Benny Vera.
The St. Francis tournament combined different karate styles and
techniques, performed by participants from all over Texas.
This tournament was only the first of 1988. Mendoza-Powell is prepar-
ing for the next competition, scheduled for March in Alice, Texas.

The results of such classic confron-
tations as Texas vs. Oklahoma and
Texas vs. Texas A&M all find their
way into the chronicles of history.
Even the “great taste” vs. “less fill-
ing” guys have made history in their
own way. Well, on January 20, 1988,
the South Texas spotlight will shine
on Hemisfair Arena as St. Mary’s
University meets The University of
Texas at San Antonio (U.T.S.A.) in
the Fifth Annual Mayor’s Challenge
Cup game. This year’s game is a
grudge match of sorts because both
teams have won two games of the
four previous meetings.
The U.T.S.A. Roadrunners will
come into the contest with a 7-5
record, which is very deceiving.
U.T.S.A. is very big inside as well as
on the bench. The Roadrunners will
try to capitalize on their height ad-

McGee and to Bruce Wheatley. Rat-
tler coach Buddy Meyer knows this
game will not be a another stroll in
the park. Meyer said, “I think
U.T.S.A. is going to be a tough oppo-
nent for us. They have good size, and
they also had a good recruiting
year...There’s no question, U.T.S.A.
will be a formidable opponent for
us.”
The Rattlers will bring the Mayor’s
Cup trophy as well as a 5-2 record to
Hemisfair Arena. The Rattlers are a
much smaller, but, quicker team.
This does not worry Meyer
however,” I don’t think we have the

tonio.”
The Mayor’s Cup game is not a
conference game, but, it will be
played for the bragging rights of San
Antonio. So, you can bet both teams
guns will be fully loaded and ready to
shoot. The scene is now set, soon the
pregame hype will end and the
showdown to see who is the best in
San Antonio will begin. When the
smoke clears and the buzzer sounds
to end the 40 minutes of play, two
things will remain- a Mayor’s
challenge Cup Champion, and the
memories of a classic confrontation.

Senior postman Henry James
would like to win the game because it
would make St. Mary’s the first team
to ever win the Mayor’s Cup Trophy
in back to back years. U.T.S.A.
basketball coach Ken Burmeister
thinks the game is good for the people
of San Antonio, but he does not think
it is the most important game of the
season. Burmeister said, “The only
game that matters to St. Mary’s and
to Buddy Meyer is the U.T.S.A.
game, which is a shame...but it
creates a good basketball at-
mosphere, and it’s also good for San
