Education meeting
The State Board of Education Dis-
trict 9 representative Randy
Stevenson will speak Monday, June
16 at 7 p.m. at the Woodmen of the
World Lodge in Jacksonville. Mr.
Stevenson will speak concerning the
new curriculum standards for Texas
and how national standards are im-
pacting Texas schools. The lodge is
located at College Street and Old
Byrd Road in Jacksonville.
Rusk Council considers
funeral home-request
The Rusk City Council will con-
sider a request at 5 p.m. Thursday
for a zone change in the Dickerson
Addition to allow for the location of
a funeral home. Ronnie McGowen is
the applicant for the business at 207
and 209 Beale Street. Also, the coun-
cil will consider a request for the
location of a mobile home at 1205
Lowery Street.
In other business, the council will
hear a report from the Beautiflca-
tion Committee concerningplans for
Butler Park.
A new member will be appointed
to the Planning and Zoning Board.
The relocation of a sewer main on
Reeder Street will be considered at
the meeting.
The council will consider bids for
the lease-purchase of two new police
cars.

Ground breaking held
Gallatin officials held a
ground breaking Tuesday,
June 3 at the site of the
new fire building. The
metal building measures
60 feet by 62 feet and will
arrive unassembled in
July.
The new structure will
be built by volunteer
firefighters and the existing
metal building will be turned
into a meeting room.
Cost of the fire station was
$7,200, which included deUv-
ery, and was paid for by the
fire department reserve funds.
It will house all five fire trucks.
Cherokee County Commis-
sioners will perform drainage
and otbqr.dirt work at the
building site.
