17 Wells fourth graders take field trip to NASA
Friday, May 9, 1997, 17 fourth
graders, 10 parents, and two adults
from Wells Elemen-
tary School in Wells
left for Space Center
Houston and Johnson
Space Center in Hous-
ton.
On their journey to
NASA the students
saw commercial air-
planes, "spaghetti
bowls," skyscrapers,
the Houston Ship
Channel, a high
bridge, and an inter-
state highway. They
also experienced
bumper-to-bumper
traffic.
Upon arrival at Space Center
Houston, the group was greeted by
Diane Kane, an educational special-
ist at Space Center Houston. The
students then ventured to the Space
Center Plaza where they explored a
full-size Space Shuttle Mock-up. The
j Students Visit ~
adventure gave the students a close-
up look at the middeck and flight
deck of the orbiter.
The students' next
stop was the Space
Center Theatre where
they watched "To be an
Astronaut" on a five
story IMAX movie
screen. The students
waited to enter the the-
atre in the Astronaut
Gallery where they saw
actual space suits worn
during the different
stages of the United
States' exploration of
space.
After lunch at the
Zero-G Diner, the stu-
dents watched as some students
were allowed to repair a satellite
while learning about the friction-
less environment of space on a MMU
(manned maneuvering unit)
Trainer, or they were able to try
their hand at landing a space shuttle
on a computer simulator. Next, the
group tried on real space helmets
used during the Mercury, Gemini,
and Apollo missions.
The NASA Tram Tour took the
group into Johnson Space Center
where they visited the new Mission
Control Center. The students saw
the main control room with the ac-
tual consoles and computers that
take control of shuttle flights during
lift-off.
On the way back to Space Center
Houston, the Tram Tour stopped at
Rocket Park where group pictures
were taken in front of a massive
Saturn V rocket.
Upon returning to Space Center
Houston the group enjoyed Space
Dots lee Cream before heading to
the Starship Gallery. The group
watched "On Human Destiny," a
film that looks into the past, present,
and future of manned space flight.
Then they toured the Starship Gal-
lery where they saw the Mercury
capsule, "Faith-7," flown by Gordon

Lunar Rover, the Skylab 1-G
Trainer, a docking module trainer,
and a shuttle Endeavor model.
While in the Lunar Samples Vault
the students touched a 3.8 billion-
