The Chanukah holiday ushers
in for the Jewish people a time of
happy celebration, commemorating
a victory that has proved a bless-
ing not only to the Jews but to
many peoples of the world. At one
time Chanukah was celebrated in

type of entertainment. When it
comes to religion for ultra liberal-
ism, “I shall let my child choose
his own faith.” That is not normal
nor healthy. Our children should
have the benefit of adult help in
the transmission of religious ideals
as well as in the choosing of their
other pursuits. Good and normal
us develop into the finest human
being according to the dimensions
of our religious identity. To place
the obstacle of complete religious
choice in the path of a child is
cruel.
We who are Jews should utilize
the time of Chanukah for Jewish
celebration in a Jewish manner.
We should respect the holidays of
our Christian friends as Christian

is one of shining and resplendent
joy.
This is the season, too, when our
Christian friends celebrate their
holidays. They, too, have magnifi-
cent ceremonies and customs. The
atmosphere for them is exceeding-
ly merry and joyous.
The remarkable thing about A-
merica is that neither we nor our
friends are expected to change
one iota fom our own customs,
rituals, or mode of celebration. |

with its miraculour victory of a
few over many, and with the
celebrations for Christians. To
them there is a religious signifi-
cance in their various customs and
symbols. To imitate a custom with-
out accepting* its significance, does
not respect it but rather makes
sham and mockery of it.
The holiday season is nearly
here; for the Jewish people Chanu-

will realize that our greatest re- I
spect of others comes only when
we learn to respect ourselves; That
we can only honor others when we
gain a place of honor for our-
selves. Imitation is always less
than the original. Imitation of
what may be to some, a meaning-
less gesture is worthless and dis-
courteous; worthless to us, and
discourteous to our neighbor.
I hope and pray that our people
will learn to celebrate their holi-
day proudly and with significant
fervor, thus transmitting healthy
religious values to our youngsters
thus teaching them to associate
our faith and our way of life with
proud moments and happy accom-
lishments. To do that let us take
the advice of one of Shakespeare’s
wisest characters: “TO THINE
