a hug rather than medicine.
“Sometimes kids have just as
much of a stress problem as
adults,” she said, “and they just
have to get away from things.
She recalled one particular
instance. “I had one little boy come
in holding his head with both hands.
I asked him if he had a headache and
he shook his head. I asked him if he
had a stomachache and he shook his
head. When I asked him if he had a
sore throat he said, ‘No, I just had
to get out of class.’

and 6 months when she started
school.
Although the school has a two-
and-a-half year program, she said it
took her five years to graduate.
“People would always remark
that they never saw me without a
book in my hands. It wasn’t easy
because my kids are very involved
in sports so, as a family we were
always busy,” she said.
Many times during the five years
Cheatham said she wasn’t sure she
would graduate.
During the clinical portion of her
training, Cheatham said she worked
two days in the hospital and two
days in the classroom.
“Even when the kids were sick or
there was a family crisis some-
where, I might have a major test.
The drive back and forth to Dallas
wasn’t fun, but we were told we
couldn’t miss any material because
the information was never
repeated,” she said.
“I was in a car accident while I
was doing clinic work, but I couldn’t

added.
