On Sunday June 4, 1967, the
descendants of Salathial and
Mary Coffey met at the American
Legion Hall in McKinney for the
annual Coffey Family Reunion.
Salathial Coffey came to Tex-
as in 1855. The family originated
in Virginia in the early colonial
times and participated actively in
the early colonization period of
the country, and many served in
the Revolutionary War.
The family went from Virginia
to North Carolina and thence to
Kentucky. Then Salathial Coffey
brought his family on the long
journey to Texas. His family con-
sisted of His wife, seven chil-
dren of his own and six step-
children. After a long journey of
some six weeks in wagons, they
arrived in Texas and settled in
the Wetsel community, later mov-
ing to a farm east of Allen. They
reared several orphan children
besides their own family. Three
children were born to them after
arriving in Texas. The relatives
of this fine family feel very hon-
ored to be able to meet together
to renew old acquaintances and
make new ones each year.
A large number of relatives
registered for the occasion. At
noon the tables were spread with
all kinds of good food and every-
one enjoyed the food and the fel-
lowship. The blessing was given
by Bro. Earl Rogers. Following
lunch a short business meeting
was conducted by W. T. Dungan,
Chairman for the occasion. Prizes
were given to Mrs. W. A. Dungan
— the oldest person present; to
little Miss Lynn Baker, a great,
great, great granddaughter of
Margaret (Coffey) Kerby - the
