Protect right to bear arms
Those who know me may
wonder why a great-grand-
mother would be concerning
herself with the Second
Amendment, or our right to
bear arms. Well, we are sup-
posed to gain wisdom with
age, so I Want to impart some
that I have gained,
A study of history will
tell us that had Hitler not
confiscated firearms from
the German citizens, he
would not have been able to
achieve the power that ulti-
mately presented the world
with war. The Japanese did
not invade our West Coast,
as they were able to do,
because they were aware that
almost every household had
firearms.
But we don't have to look
that far back. Presently,
England and Australia
are experiencing the worst
crime wave of their history,
following the registration
and inevitable confiscation
of their arms. No, there is
no protection against crimi-
nals entering their homes at
will. That will be our fate if
we don't put some real effort
into preventing it.
The gun control people
are very active in trying to
prevent the rest of us from
exercising our constitutional
right to be able to protect our-
selves. We must not forget
that the Second Amendment
was actually put in place for
our protection against the
government.
With the sniper (terror)
attacks now going on in the
Washington area, the cry
has already gone out that
we need more gun control
laws. The liberal faction in
our government is very much
behind this movement. There
is much hue and cry over the
children' hves lost due to guns
(more are killedin swimming
pools), yet these same people
promote the "woman's right
to choose'' which actually
means the killing of inno-
cent unborn babies. The full
term babies that are actually
born, except for their head,
but killed at that stage are
classified as abortion. There's
something wrong with that
picture.
All these laws have been
passed by former democratic
administrations, and those
who vote that ticket are
voting for this to continue
and additional gun control
laws to be passed. We can
be assured that licensing
and registration will give
the government the power
to knock on our door and
demand our guns, or face
very punitive action. Then
we will be helpless.
Think of your vote as
protecting your home and
family.

Where were you?
Did you believe a hurricane
could have an impact on East
Texas? Did you notice hundreds
of cars passing through Alto,
Rusk and Jacksonville last
Wednesday? Did you know that
children from Beaumont's burn
unit were transferred to Rusks
ETMC facihty?
Over 200 families left their
homes to find a safe place to stay
while Hurricane Lili teased the
Texas coast once again. Most
evacuees spent over 10 hours
on the road searching for a
motel room or being turned
Somewhere between Emily

I would say that approximately
20 percent of those receiving
an invitation that says "Please
RSVP'' never respond. But then,
maybe, I think, they don't know
what it means. It totally goes
over their heads, or they figure,
"It doesn't mean me!" The thing
is, no one's a mind reader, and
that's why those letters are so
very important.
According to Webster's dic-
tionary RSVP means "Please
reply" and, I assume, "very

left Lufkin with no place to go.
They came to Tyler. Red Cross

Where were you during this

at the shelter, helping people
get rest, giving help and hope
when they were exhausted. I
was exhausted too, but when
you're helping others your best

feeling.
Could a massive fire like
Colorado happen in Ea st Texas?
Could a major flood like South
Texas hurt our community? Or
a tornado? Where would you be
during that time? I hope volun-

any other agency set up to help
others through a disaster.
East Texas is overdue for a

promptly'—even Webster doesn't
clarify the la st two wor d& How -
ever, to respond certainly can
put the big event thrower at
ease—it helps to plan for seating,
food and space in general. (Can
you imagine paying for 10-20 or
•30 extra chairs and numerous
tables with an exorbitant
charge and no one shows up?)
At a recent wedding, 11 party
crashers upset a maitre d and
he had to hustle for more chairs
and tables (not to mention more
food).
Now, most invitations to a
formal event include RSVP
with one or two phone num-
bers and contacts. Not only do
they include that important post
script, but have courteously
included, and paid for, a card
and a self-addressed stamped
envelope for that response.
Such a plea was added to our
granddaughter's wedding invi-
tations for the August wedding
in San Antonio—which tookplace
at the lovely vineyard. (She'd
scouted through the Internet
for the ideal place for an outdoor
wedding —her dream wedding.)
Because of limited seating, and
catering costs. Jennifer had to
have a head count. The limited
list came to 130 and Jen had to

Those extra party crashers
had no earthly idea how they
nearly ruined a perfect wed-
ding.
Jennifer and Kevin's dream
wedding had some anxious
moments, yet it all came out like
the dream they'd planned. The
parents, as usual, had inside-
out pockets, and gave sighs of
rehef. Memorable blessingswill
go on and on in our hearts and
minds.
But, I'd like to ask you to
respond accordingly when
someone asks for an RSVP—
it'll relieve some of the anxiety
involved and they'll definitely
appreciate it.
