Yellowjackets fall to Centerville Tigers, 17-13
If the Alto Yellowjacket s
season had to end, I can't think
of a more exciting way for it to
do so than the 17 — 13 loss to
the Centerville Tigers,
Pure raw excitement from
start to finish is the only way
to describe this contest.
Never have
two teams
fought so
valiantly for
so long to see
who moves
on.
The game
started with
a bang. The
Randall
Birdsong
Jackets took
the opening
kickoff and
drove 67 yards to score.
Josh Moore traveled the final
two yards with 6:05 left in the
first quarter. Aubrey Sturrock
booted the PAT to give the
Jackets the lead at 7 — 0.
The Jackets kicked off to the
Tigers who started at their
own 31.
On Centerville's first play
from scrimmage Derrick
Montgomery delivered what
could very well be the "Slob-
ber Knocker" of all "Slobber
Knockers.
Montgomery hit the Tiger ball
carrier so hard it looked hke a
tree falling in the forest.
Inspired by Montgomery's
big hit the Jacket defense
held the Tigers on a fourth
down and four to take over on
their own 26.
Vicious hitting, spectacular
running and very little pass-
ing was the menu for the
evening.
Alto and Centerville
exchangedpunts for most of the
remainder of the first quarter
and all of the second quarter.
Tiger quarterback Wayne
Scott brought the fans to their
feet as he streaked 80 yards to
an apparent touchdown but
a holding penalty brought it
back.
The Jacket defense then
bottled up the Tigers, forcing
a punt.
Late in the second period the
Jackets had an opportunity to
go up 10 — 0.
Tad Scott recovered a Tiger
fumble at the Centerville 15.
The Jackets drove to the eight
and were faced with a fourth
down situation. Alto opted to
attempt a 24 yard field goal.
The kick sailed wide left and the
score remained Alto-7 Center-
ville-0, as the half ended.
The Tigers, having deferred
their option, received the kick-
off to open the second half of
play. The Tigers set up shop at
their own 40.
Wayne Scott and company
started driving the ball. The
Jacket defense bent just a
little but stiffened and forced
a punt.
Andy Tyra had the best punt-
ing night he has ever had. Tyra's
shortest attempt of the night
was 42 yards. His longest effort
was 67 yards. His average for
the game was 48 yards.
With : 34 left in the third
quarter the Tigers faced a
fourth down at the Jacket 19,
Centerville opted to attempt a
36 yard field goal.
Tiger freshmanDaniel Coffey
nailed the field goal to put the
Tigers on the scoreboard. At
the end of three Alto 7 Cen-
terville 3.
The two teams swappedpunts
a couple of times. Alto had the
football at their own 28 where
the Jackets lost a fumble,
Tiger's football at the Yellow-
jacket 29. Wayne Scott ran the
option to perfection and scored
on a nine yard carry with 8:40
left in the contest.
Coffey drilled the PAT to
set the score at Centerville 10
Alto 7.
Gerald Ligon fielded the
ensuing kickoff and took off
hke a run away train up the
field. Ligon sailed to the 50 and
was slung out of bounds by his
facemask.
The non call seemed to fire
up the Jacket offense. Wait, fire
up? No, they were down right
mad. Josh Moore guided the
Jackets down the field to the
Tiger 29yardhne. Then, Moore
droppedbacktopass, sawLaco-
nious Wade in the end zone who
made a spectacular grab for
the touchdown. The PAT was
blocked but the Jackets were
back on top, 13 — 10, with 5:53
left in the contest.
Alto set up to kickoff to the
Tigers. Stop the Tigers, get
the ball back and win was the
thought running through every
Yellowjacket mind.
The Tigers startedfrom their
own 34. Wayne Scott executed
the option, kept the ball him-
self when needed and started
marching his men down the
field.
It was a chess match, a real
strategic battle.
Suddenly the Tigers were at
the Yellowjacket 21 yard line.
Wayne Scott rolled out to pass
andfound JasonSmith all alone
in the end /one.
Touchdown Tigers with 2:56
left in the war. Coffey added
the PAT to set the score at
Centerville 17 Alto 13.
The Jackets had one more
opportunity to bring home the
bacon. Starting at their own
38 with time running out the
Jackets started their chive to
the goal hne.
The Tiger defense had other
ideas. The Tigers slopped Alio
on a fourth and 15 situation to
seal the victory.
Alto concluded their season
with a 7-5 record and a bi-dis-
trict championship trophy.
The Jackets came into this
contest as a three point under-
dog but played their hearts out
and came oh so close to moving
on in the AA playoffs.
It was not in the cards for
Alto this night.
When the gun sounded it
was time for the Jackets to
hold their heads high and con-
gratulate the victors.
Our heroes in Black and Gold
did just exactly this with class
and dignity. A fine example of
sportsmanship and champion-
ship.
Many things go in to win-
ning football games. Many
things go in to losing football
games. The one thing that is
common to both winning and
losing is team work. This group
of talented athletes won as a
team and lost as a team all
year long.
Many, many thanks guys for
an exciting football season.
The Alto Yellowjackets offensive lineman form a pocket around quarterback Josh Moore
as he looks for an open receiver down field in the Jackets tough 17-13 loss to the Center-
ville Tigers at Groesbeck Stadium Friday in the second round of UIL High School playoff
action. The Jackets ended the year with a 7-5 record and Bi-district champions.
Alto offensive
lineman Eric
Bradford (#50),
Craig Skin-
ner (#52) and
Tramaine Ross
(#77) block for
an Alto running
back during the
Jackets 17-13
loss at Groes-
beck in the Area
round of play-
offs.
All of us can hardly wait until
next year.
