District president visits local VFW
Library Study Club

This was a busy month with
all the Veterans Day events that
were planned.
At the regular meeting, Pat
Wade, District 19 President
and Richard Wade District 19
Commander made their official
visit to Cherokee Co. Memorial
VFW andLadies Auxiliary 3406
to inspect books and records.
On Friday Nov. 8 Open House
and Exhibit were held for Rusk
Primary second graders. This
program is intended to expose
them to the history of our
Nations military actions and
the involvement and sacrifices
made by area veterans that
guaranteed our freedoms.
Auxiliary members along
with veterans from WWII,
Korean conflict and Vietnam
War were available to speak
with students. Jerry Don
Heartless and Jerry McClure
volunteered to dress in period
clothes represen ling a Confed-
erate officer and a WWII Navy
Sailor.
Veterans and residents of
local nursing homes were
invited to attend Veterans Day
Open House and Exhibit as well
as the Memorial Service Nov.
11 on the Courthouse lawn at
the statue.
In October there was a Hal-
loween Dance as a special fund-
raiser for several projects and
programs. The proceeds will
be contributed to the State
Presidents Special Project, the
Alzheimer's Foundation, for
research, education and treat-
ment; to Operation Uplink a
program that provides phone
cards to service personnel,
such as those involved with
Operation Enduring Freedom

talized vets, so thtí auxiliary
can keep in touch with loved
ones at home. Wal-Mart stores
are presently promoting this
program.
Funds will go to cancer aid
and research, this year 's focus
is on melanoma/skin cancer.
The most prevalent of all can-
cers, usually caused by over-
exposure to the sun. Another
project is Rusk State Hospital
Volunteer Service Christmas
for the Patients.
Final preparations were dis-
cussedfor the Young American
Creative Patriotic Art contest
to be heldin December. The con-
test is open to all High School
students (foreign exchange
students do not qualify).
Motion was made and passed
to present Buddy Poppy

The "wrecking crew" come back on the field in the Eagles
50-39 victory over Wilmer-Hutchins Friday night at Bruce
Field in Athens. The victory added the Area Championship
to the Bi-district title Rusk picked up last week. The Eagles
will move on to play Daingerfield Saturday afternoon at
Rose Field in Tyler. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

the auxiliary. She spoke on the
importance of assisting needy

and Mrs. Thomas Phillips and
Lurlene Bowden.

3 at 7 p.m. Fire Chief Wayne
Morgan will be guest speaker
Dinner will be served at 6 p. m.

The Library Study Club of
Rusk celebrated 100 years
of community service with a
cateredbanquet in the new fel-
lowship hall of the First United
Methodist Church in Rusk.
Eighty members were served
a barbecue dinner and enter-
tained with nostalgic medleys
from each decade of the 20th
century. Wanda Robison, on
keyboard, and Marvin Robi-
son, baritone, provided the
music.
Turning 100 years of club
history into a one hour read-
ers theatre presentation was
director Zelwanda Hendrick
and performers Nancy Guinn,
Betty McLain and Frances
Whiteside. Beginning in 1902
as a bachelor library club, the
founding members came from
