of Beta Sigma Phi met for
a Thanksgiving social and
regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 18 at the Con-
gregational Methodist Church
in Rusk.
Members had a covered dish
dinner with traditional holi-
day fare. Judy Fountain and
Lynette Cox servedashostesses
for the meeting.
In a business meeting
presided over by Mrs. Cox,
members approved a scholar-
ship payment and discussed
various projects of the orga-
nization. Monday, Dec. 2 was
set as the date of the chapter
Christmas party.
Mary Ann Patterson read a
Thanksgiving poem and pre-
sented a humorous outlook on
holiday traditions.

Mrs. Fountain, Mrs. Cox, Mrs.
Patterson, Diann Norton,
Pam Todd, And fa Hassell,
Dottie Norton, Jeannette
Goldsberry and Linda Star-
key. Misty Todd was a guest.
Other meetings
The chapter met Oct. 21 at the
El Ranchero Mexican Restau-
rant in Rusk for a combination
dutch treat dinner meeting and
reveahng of secret sisters.
Pam Todd presented the cul-
tural program on home care for
the aging.

The Congregational Meth-
odist Church of Rusk was the
location of the chapter's Nov. 4
meeting.
Hostess Mrs. Cox served
assorted sandwiches, a veg-
etable tray and chips and dip.
Members discussed plans for
the Thanksgiving covered dish
dinner and Christmas social,
Mrs. Cox presented the pro-
gram on "Elections and Voting;
Emphasis on Persons Instru-
mental in Enacting Women's
Right to Vote."
Mrs. Fountain won the host-
ess gift.

The Crisis Center of Ander-
son andCherokée Counties will
open the doors of its warehouse
for a giant garage sale. The sale
is scheduled from 9 a.m.-3p.m.
Saturday, Deo. 14. Clothing,
books, toys, home and office
furniture, dishes, appliances
and other household items
will be offered for sale.
The Crisis Center is located
across the railroad tracks
from the Tomato Bowl at 700
E. Cherokee in Jacksonville.
Proceeds will go to further
the work of the Crisis Oentér
to assist victims of family vio-
lence, sexual assault and child
abuse.

The Cherokee County Soil
and Water Conservation Board
elected officers for the upcom-
ing year at the regular monthly
meeting Oct. 28.
The board meets monthly to
discuss activities, goals, leg-
islation and county agricul-
tural operators conservation
plans on a local, statewide
and national level. Five board
members, each representing a
different section of the county,
voted to maintain the existing
state of officers.
Chairmanof the board will be
Roland Adams of Jacksonville
representing Zone II, which
includes the section of the dis-
trict which extends south from
Highway 79 to Highway 84 and
east to Mud Creek.
Also, re-elected as vice-
chairman was Bill Poteet of
Jacksonville, who represents
Zone IV, which extends east of
Mud Creek to the county line.
Morris Dixon of Rusk has been
re -elected seer etar y-trea surer.
He represents Zone III, the area
between Highways 84 and 21.
Harold Parker of Alto is a
member of the boardrepresent-
ing the southernmost section
of the district. Zone V, which
extends south of Highway 21
to the county hne.
The board welcomed new-
member Keith Lindsey of
Mixon, representing Zone I,
which covers the northwestern
corner of the county bordered on
the south by Highway 79 and
extending to Mud Creek.
Rusk Thalian Club

RISD Superintendent Dr.
Jim Largent was speaker for
the Rusk Thalian Club Thurs-
day, Nov. 14, in the First United
Methodist Church fellowship
hall. Attending were 16 mem-
bers and one guest.
Dr. Largent spoke on the pro-
posed school vouchers. This is
one of the subjects fitting into
the club's theme of programs
for the year entitled "Reading
and Education.''
Refreshments of jam cakg
squares, miniature apricot and
nut tarts and nuts were served
with coffee from a flower ad can-
dles decoratedtable. Hostesses
were Lily Pye, Flossie Nixson
and Dorothy McCIure.
Billye Clare, president,
presided for a short business
meeting. Members voted to con-
tribute to Rusk State Hospital
Volunteer Council and the Rusk
Dream Tree.
Reading advocate Lois Tag-
gart presented a book alert
for the month. She chose Jan
Karen's Metfordbooks andgave
an overview of the contents of
some of them.
