Chuck Hopson forms Alto Lions Club
educational committee
State Representative Chuck
Hopson (D-Jacksonville) has
announced that he has set up
a Community Committee on
Pubhc Education.
Rep. Hopson has asked sev-
eral members of the education
community tojoin him inAustin
in an advisory role on important
issues and legislation regard-
ing public school finance and
education resources.
Rep. Hopson has asked the
following to share their views
and concerns, and they have
agreed to be a part of the
Community Committee on
Pubhc Education: Beckville
Superintendent John Booth,
Wells Superintendent Dale
Morton, Jacksonville Super-
intendent Stuart Bird, Hen-
derson Superintendent Roger
Hailey, Crockett Superinten-
dent Dormán Jackson, Tatum
Superintendent Dee Hartt,
Rusk Superintendent James
Largent, Carlisle Superinten-
dent Mike Payne and Carthage
Superintendent Reba Allison.
Public school finance is an
issue of great debate this ses-
sion. H.B. 604 is set to repeal
the current system of financing
Texas schools; however there
is no system to replace it with,
nor is there a plan for property
tax relief.
Local school boards must
tackle the tough issues of how
to fundpubhc education equita-
bly across the state, while at the
same time reheving property
tax rates.
"With 31 school districts and
28 of them receiving money as
a result of the current system
of public school finance, there
is a concern shared by our
superintendents of where we
go, if "Robin Hood is repealed.
It's not a perfect system, but it
has benefitted an overwhelm-
ing majority of students in our
district.
Without recapture, those 28
districts would have to raise
their tax rate an average of
24 cents per $100 evaluation
-- that is 15 cents over the con-
stitutionally mandated cap of
$1.50," Rep. Hopson said.
This committee will focus
on issues and legislation that
will help local school boards
and communities tackling the
public school finance system,
advising Rep. Hopson on legis-
lation before the 78th Legisla-
ture and developing ideas that
will help communities better
Serve the School children of
District 11.
The Committee plans a
meeting in Austin to discuss
the latest issues before the
Legislature.
Persons with questions or
concerns regarding issues or a
particular piece of legislation
may contact Rep. Hopson s
office at 1-866-233-5100 or
512-463-0592.

Shuttle accident did not make animals sick
Animal health officials inves-
tigating the reported illness in
three cows in Cherokee County
have found no evidence of a
relationship between the ill-
ness and the Columbia space
shuttle disaster.
More than 600 pieces of shut-
tle material have been found in
Cherokee County. The investi-
gationby veterinarians from the
Texas Animal Health Commis-
sion (TAHC) and NASA began
Feb. 7, after threecows on sepa-
rate premises exhibited swelling
of the tongue and head. Two of
thecowsdied, and samples were
collected for testing at the Texas
Veterinary Medical Diagnostic
Laboratory at College Station.
Blood samples were taken from
the remaining cow. In addition,
several pen-raised deer in the
same area were reported to have
stiff and swollen necks after the
shuttle disaster.
"Autopsies on the two
dead cows were suggestive
of pneumonia, with bacterial
complications. A third cow is
recovering,'' said Dr. James
Lenarduzzi, acting executive
director for the TAHC, the
state's regulatory agency for
hvestock and poultry health.
"The two deer recovered fully
after being administered anti-
inflammatory drugs. The deer
may have sustained an injury
when they were startled by the
noise of the shuttle breakup, or
when shuttle material fell into
their pen.''
"We routinely work with pri-
vate veterinary practitioners
and producers when unusual

death losses or signs of ill-

Max Coats, TAHC assistant
executive director. "In this
instance, concerns were raised
because it was not clear if the
animals might have developed
an adverse health response after
contact with shuttle material.
We were relieved to find that
the cattle had not died from a
hazardous chemical substance
