died in Tyler
Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Lloyd Pipes. He graduated from
Frankston High School, and
attended Wichita University
and the University of Texas.
Mr. Pipes servedin the Army Air
Corp., flying 34 combat missions
over Europe during WWII. He
was a member of the Catipillar
Club. He was a 32 degree Mason
for more than 50 years.
Mr. Pipes was a former presi-
dent and director of First State
Bank of Rusk and was owner and
a director and board chairman
of the Crockett State Bank,
director and vice-president of
Empire Life Ins. Co., former
president of the Rusk Lions
Club, Zone Chairman of Lions
International, past president of
Rusk Chamber Of Commerce,
vice-president and director
of Cherokee County Crippled
Children s Association.
He was a director of the Rusk
Industrial Foundation, director
Cherokee County TB Associa-
tion, director of the Cherokee
Co. Wildlife Assoc., past presi-
dent of the East Texas Bankers
Association, Past Director of
American Bankers Association.
Mr. Pipes received the Silver
Beaver Aw ardfor his many years
of work with the Boy Scouts Of
America. He served on the first
Cherokee County Airport Board
and assisted in the building of
the airport.
He was a former member of the
First United Methodist Church
where he served as chairman of
the board of stewards and vari-
ous boards and committees. He
was a member of the First Con-
gregationalMethodist Church of
Rusk at the time of his death.
Mr. Pipes was preceded in
death by his parents and a
sister.
Survivors include his wife of
56 years, Jimye Arnwine Pipes
of Rusk; two sons and daughters-
in-law: Jerry and Dina Pipes of
Crockett and Steven anclAnnette
Pipes of Piano; three grandsons,
Brandon and Blake Pipes of Col-
lege Station and Cameron Pipes
of Piano.

1929, in Atoy and had hved in
Cherokee County all of his life.
He was a member of the Mount
Cove Missionary Baptist Church
in Atoy.

Hot dog luncheon planned
The Maydelle VFD will sponsor a fund
raiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fire
station. The event is to raise money for
thepurchaseofnewequipment, aswellas
the maintenance of the fire trucks. There
will be a raffle for a new shotgun or $300
in merchandise as well as a raffle for a
picnic table. A person does not have to
be present to win.
A number of door prizes will be given
away. For additional information on the
event or to make a donation interested

Citizens 1st Bank has donated two model train sets to the Friends of the Texas State
Railroad to be raffled off Oct. 15 as a fundraiser. A Polar Express train will be given in
Rusk and a Christmas Train in Palestine. Both are collector's models. Winners will be
notified by phone. A second drawing will be held for a pair of tickets to ride the TSR. A
train is on display at Citizens 1st Bank. Tickets are available there as well as other sites
in Rusk and Palestine where signs are displayed. Also, the train will be shown at the
Heritage Festival in Rusk. Train posters may be purchased at the festival. This year's
poster by Clemente Guzman of TP&W is dedicated to fellow TP&W train and wildlife

Horse Registry Nationals were
held in the Expo Square at
Tulsa, Okla. Sept. 11-18. There
were 1.160 miniatures in com-
petition.
Adventure II of Rusk entered
seven horses and were given

contests for Voice of Democracy
and Patriots Pen.
The Voice of Democracy pro-
gram is open to any student in
the 9-12 grades to voice their
opinion on their responsibility
of our nation. The theme for
this year's contest is "My Com-
mitment to America's Future.''
Entries must be completed
and in the hands of the VFW/
Auxiliary no later than Nov. 1.
The Patriot's Pen/Essay con-
test is open to any student in
the seventh or eighth grade.

Johnson of Rusk; and several
nieces and nephews.

deacon for 40 years. He served
on the original board of directors
of the Newton Co. Pubhc Health
Clinic and was a member of the
Building Advisory Committee of
the Burkeville ISD.
Survivors include his wife,
Robby Mills of Burkeville;
two sons, the Rev. Jack Mills
Jr. of Rusk and Jerry Mills
of Burkeville; two daughters,
Janie LaFleur of Sulphur, La.
and JoAnn Boquet of Oregon,
13 grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

The Rusk Main Slreet2003 benefit golf
tournament will be held Saturday Sept.
27 at Birmingham Forest Golf Club in
Rusk. Format is a two person scramble.
There will be two flights, the first flight's
combined handicapsmustto tal 20 ormore
and the second flight's handicaps must
total at least 30.
Entry for the event is $30 per person.
Cash prizes will be paid out to the winning
teams in each flight and a hole in one
could win a 2003 F-150 from Bob Francis
Ford in Rusk.
