Old Palestine Cemetery.Mrs.

She was born Aug. 7, 1923,
in Alto to Hilry Lindsey and
Louellen Moore Lindsey. She
lived in Alto all of her life and
owned and operated Spark-
man Grocery for 15 years. She
retired from Rusk State Hos-
pital where she worked for 18
years as a psychiatric nurse
technician. Mrs. Sparkman was
a member of the A. Frank Smith
United Methodist Church. She
was preceded in death by her
husband. Miller Sparkman;
a son, Gary Sparkman; and
brothers, Doyle Lindsey and
Orval Lindsey.Survivors are
a sister, Laverne Grogan of
Alto; a granddaughter, Tisha
Sparkman of San Antonio; and
numerous nieces andnephews.

Church, where she served as
a choir member, administrative
board member, Junior Meth-
odist Youth Fellowship leader,
Sunday school teacher. United
Methodist Women member
and was a charter member of
the Trailblazers. She worked
for many years at Knight's
Variety Store in Alto.She was
preceded in death by her hus-
band, Charlie Leo Page; a son,
Charles Lester Page; a brother,
Carl Rogers; and a Sister,
Ethel Townsend. Survivors are
a daughter and son-in-law,

of Alto; a daughter-in-law, Judy

Wells for 35 years, was a home-
maker and a member of the
Calvary Baptist Church.She
was preceded in death by her
husband, Marvin Jackson; two
sons, Odell Jackson and Terry

Mr. Miller was born April 9,
1919 to William Hugh (Hudie)
Dickey andEva (MissEvie) Tan-
nery Dickey in the Central High
Community. Hegraduatedfrom
Alto High School and Stephen
F. Austin College. After serving
as principal of Central High
School, he Was drafted into the
Army. He studied "Advanced
Administration'' at Ole Miss
and moved through numerous
outfits before assignment as
Sergeant-Major of the 617th
Field Artillery at Fort Bragg.
He was stationedin Italy when
the Germans surrendered and
was scheduled for deployment
to Japan. He made a detour to
Cleveland, Ohio where he mar-
ried Ruth Wehrle and they set
up housekeeping at Fort Hood.
After the war and refresher
courses at the University of
Texas in Austin, he pursued
a career as an accountant for
Southwestern Drug Corp. in
Dallas, Childs Food Stores
in Jacksonville, Childs-Big
Chain in Shreveport, and
Kroger Company in Memphis
and St. Louis. After retirement
to Tyler in 1978 many former
Kroger co-worker s from Dallas,
Shreveport, and Lake Jack-
son came to celébrate "Miller
Dickey Day" at Lake Palestine

of Alto was Monday at 3 p.m.
in the Weeping Mary Baptist
Church near Alto with the Rev.
Ike Wiley officiating. Burialfol-
lowed at the St. Thomas Chapel
Cemetery.
Mr. Pope died Thursday Jan.
8, in Alto. He was born Oct. 27,
1945, in Alto to Add & Annie
Laura Ross Pope. He hved all
his life in the Weeping Mary
Community near Alto and was
a member of the Weeping Mary
Baptist Church. He was pre-
ceded in death by four brothers
and two sisters.
Benny L. Quick
Graveside service for Benny
L. Quick, 73, of Alto was at 2
p.m. Tuesday at the Forest
Park Lawndale Cemetery in
Houston.
Mr. Quick died Friday in
Nacogdoches. He was born
June 2, 1930, in Houston to
William and Memory Moore
Quick. He lived most of his life
in Houston and for the past
six years in Alto. Mr. Quick
was a U.S. Army veteran of
the Korean War. He Served as
a corporate pilot in Houston
working for Red Adair, Beech
Aircraft and Cruse Aviation. He
was preceded in death by two
sisters, Joan and Georgeanne
and a brother, Donnie.
Survivors are a son and
daughter-in-law, Stephen and
Donna Quick of Alto; a daugh-
ter, Julie Quick of Austin;
a brother. Tommy Quick of
Houston; a sister, Betty Far-
rell of Alice; six grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Drivers safety course set
The state certified MRP Drivers safety
course will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 2-3 at
the Rusk First Presbyterian Church base-
ment, 312 North Main Street. There will be
two four-hour sessions. Participants must
be 50 years old or older and have a valid
drivers license and pay a $10 registration
fee. A certificate showing that the person
has completed the course will allow a 10
percent savings on automobile premiums
for three years. MRP membership is not
required. Call 903-683-8052 to register.
Funeral for Coy Milton
Smith, 90, of Rusk was at 11
a.m. Tuesday at the Eastside
Baptist Church with the Rev.
Jack Mills Jr. and the Rev. Josh
McDonald officiating. Burial
was in the Arnold Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Friday in
Jacksonville. He was born
June 30, 1913, in the Barsola
community near Alto to Walter
and Olhe Holhs Smith.
He lived 60 years in Alto
and the remaining 30 years
Coy Milton Smith
in Rusk. He was co-owner of
the Alto Floral Company for
25 years and retired as a car-
penter for Rusk State Hospital.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Mary Smith and two
brothers, Herman Smith and
T.E. (Cooter) Smith.
Survivors are his son,
Douglas C. Smith of Elkhart;
a daughter and son-in-law,
Glenda and Chester Haynes of
Gushing; two sisters, Pauline
Welch Hayes and Anna Collier
Marshall of Tyler; eight grand-
children, Chett Haynes, Crystal
Shidler, Cliff Haynes, Stepha-

coming at Central High School

etery in Alto. He also became
active in developing the Dickey
Farm in Central High, a Heri-
tage Farm founded in 1867 by
his great-grandfather, William
Martin, anclhis wifeCarmelite,
who se father J o seph Rutherford
died at the Alamo. Mr. Dickey
a teacher and Sunday school
superintendent at his church.
After his marriage, he joined
his wife's church and became
active in Lutheran churches
wherever he lived, including
being a charter member in
three of them. He is presently
a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Tyler as well as a
trustee for Mt. Zion United
Methodist Church in Alto.
Mr. Miller was preceded in
death by his parents; broth-
ers, Harland and Robert; infant
sister, Lena Lois; sister-in-law
Ruby, niece, Dorothy; and
brother-in-law, Vincent Weisz.
He is survived by his wife of
58 years, Ruth Miiler of Tyler:
a daughter and son-in-law
Joyce and Larry Hanebrink
of Chesterfield, Mo.; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Paul
and Kay Miller of Chesterfield,
Mo. and William and Merideth
Miller of Winfield, Mo.; a sister-
