Diesel No. 7
returns to TSR
By John Garbutt
Special to the Cherokeean Herald
The Texas State Railroad
sent its aging diesel. No. 7, to
Brookville Equipment Corpo-
ration at Brookville, Pa. last
Fébr uary, for the installation of
a new 1,500 horsepower diesel
engine, reconditioning and
modern electronics upgrade.
No. 7 has been returned to
the TSR essentially a brand
new engine with a new lease
of service life to the "Official
Railroad of Texas.''
Diesel No. 7 was built at
the American Locomotive
Company (ALCO) plant in
Schenectedy. N.Y. in 1947, for
the Point Comfort & Northern
Railway Company of Lolita.
The PC&N was owned by
the Aluminum Company of
America (Alcoa) and served
their aluminum manufactur-
ing plant in Point Comfort.
The Point Comfort & North-
ern Railway Company was
chartered in 1948 with its
line running from near Point
Comfort to Lavaca Bay to a
connect with the St. Louis,
Brownsville & Mexico Railway
near Lohta.
Today, Alcoa is a major stock-
holder in the PC&N, which still
serves the Alcoa facility at Point
Comfort. The railways continue
to haul nonmetal minerals,
chemicals and primary metal
products.
This hard-working diesel is
representative of the larger
type dieseis that began to
replace steam locomotives
after World War 11
With the opening of the Texas
State Railroad came the need
for a diesel engine to provide
backup service to the: steam
locomotives.
This hardworking engine was
donated by Alcoa in 1975, and
through its years at the TSR it
haspulledworktrains, carloads
of ballast and acted as backup
to steam locomotives that have
operational problems.
This engine will be in opera-
tion during the 2004 season
affording visitors the oppor-
tunity to see this beautiful
antique diesel in action.
The Texas State Railroad
2004 season begins the second
weekend of March and goes
through Nov. 21.
For reservations and more
information about, the Texas
State Railroad call (903) 683-
