I think it is a shame that
the Cherokean Herald put on
the front page, a story about
a winery, when we are having
the most God-fearing person
I know, retiring, Bro. Don
Copeland.
Bro. Don has been my pastor
for 24 years and it is going to be
very hard for me and others to
have to have another pastor.
When you mention Bro. Don
to people, they know exactly
who you are talking about.
You don't have to say the name
Copeland. Bro, Don will treat
you exactly the same no matter
where you are, no matter who
you are and no matter what
religion you are.
There is no other pastor
here in Rusk that puts in the
time that Bro Don did going
to nursing homes, homes and
hospitals.
He was constantly on the go.
I don't think people will realize
until it has happened.
This week we had our vaca-
tionBible school and on the last
night, it hit me: this is Bro.
Don's last VBS.
Please keep Bro. Don andMs.
F ayne in your prayers that God
will give them the grace to go
through this. Bro.
Don's faith is very strong and
he knows that God will not give
him more than he can handle.
I also ask that you keep our
church. Memorial Mission-
ary Baptist Church, in your
prayers, that God will send us
another God-fearing man.

STATE REP. CHUCK HOPSON
Rusk
There is a man in Rusk who
does so much for so many.
Johnny Williams III can be
seen every Sunday morning in
the choir loft at First Untied
Methodist, using his ministry
talents for the Lord.
He plays for funerals, wed-
ding and other occasions where
his beautiful music dehghts and
brings joy. He is a person who
does not hide his talents under
a bushel basket. However, his
special ministry does not end
with music.
His job with the City of Rusk
offers those who are no longer
able to chive a means of inde-
pendence. Most of his riders
have had to give up their per-
sonal vehicles due to various
reasons and each would much
prefer to have some way of
traveling on their own.
He treats each of his riders
as he would his own parents
or grandparents and cares for
their special needs.
On a personal note, I have a
close relative who is a regular
rider. Recently she failed to
come to the door at the desig-
nated time, and it was obvious
that something was wrong.
Another person might have
chiven away, but not Johnny.
He knocked at her cloor and
when no one came, he reported
her absence to the fire depart-
ment where Thomas Parsons
was on duty.
Thomas contacted me, and
I went to her home where we
found she had fallen and was
unable to get up. Thomas met
me there and helped me get
her up.
His assistance in the situa-
tion was greatly appreciated.
Had Johnny ignored the cir-
cumstances, she would have
possibly lain there much longer
before she was found. Later he
checked on her personally and
then by phone. He cares and
that means so much in this clay
and time when people are all
too often too busy to take the
time for others.
My family and I greatly
appreciate his service to the
community as well as the city
for provichng it. Johnny is
one of the unsung heroes who
make our town so special and
deserves a public thank you.

I want to expressed my
strong objection and disap-
pointment with the decision
by the Teacher Retirement
System of Texas (TRS) to move
forward with the creation of
Healthcare Reimbursement
Accounts (HRAs).
In 2001,1 helped create Texas'
first statewide health insurance
program for teachers. During
the 78th Regular Session, how-
ever, the reimbursement was
reduced from $1,000 to $500
--a measure that I strongly
opposed.
Last week, TRS made the
decision to chvert that $500
supplement from the teachers'
paychecks to HRAs, which will
be created and managed by a
private company. Teachers will
only be able to use their HRA
funds for "approved medical
expenses."
I am very disappointed with
this decision. Our teachers
are counting on that reim-
bursement to make ends meet
and to be able to afford health
insurance for their families,
The Legislature already cut
our teachers' supplement by
half, and now all of it has been
taken out of the paycheck.
During the summer Special
Session on school finance, I
authored House Bill 29, which
wouldhave restoredthe $1,000
teacher health insurance reim-
bursement to be pa ssed through
directly into teachers' and
school employees' paychecks,
Even though the bill had
broad bipartisan support, the
leadership did not allow the
bill to come to the House Floor
for a vote.
At that time I said that the
Legislature's promise to teach-
ers remains broken until the
health insurance reimburse-
ment is fully restored. We
have a teacher shortage in
Texas right now.
We need to clo everything
we can to keep our most expe-
rienced teachers and attract

Last week at the Democratic
Convention in Boston, former
President Clinton said it well:
"Strength and wisdom are not
opposing values.'

We simply can't afford four
more years of mistakes under
a president who will use both
strength and wisdom as guiding
