Some New Year Questions
For The Believer
IT is customary at this time to make
resolutions pertaining to things
which one will, and will not do, during
the New Year.
We are aware that resolutions
made in the energy of the flesh, and
resolutions dependent on one's own
strength for their fulfillment are soon
forgotten, broken or neglected.
But when the Spirit of God exer-
cises one, and when the strength of
the Lord is relied upon, definite pro-
gress in the spiritual life will be made.
Since the Lord exhorts believers to
buy up the opportunities, why not ask
ourselves the following questions with
a view to purchasing at least some of
the golden opportunities which the
New Year holds in store, if our Lord
be not come?
I. Am I determined to read the
precious Word of God more eagerly?
(Job 23:12; Jeremiah 15:16)
II. Am I resolved to attempt to
commit more Scripture verses to
memory? (Psalm 119:11; Colossians
3:16)
III. Am I purposing in my heart
to put into practice what I learn from
the Holy Scriptures? (John 13:17;
James 1:22)
IV. Am I going to improve, if pos-
sible, my record of attendance at
services? (Matthew 18:20; Hebrews
10:25)
V. Am I going to do more than
usual in the important matter of
spreading the Gospel of Christ by
using a large number of t r a c t s?
(Psalm 126:6; Ecclesiastes 11:6)
VI. Am I going to be more faithful
in the exercise of the stewardship of
my time, money, talents, and influ-
ence? (Luke 16:10; II Corinthians
9:6-8)
VII. Am I going to be a better wit-
ness for the Lord Jesus Christ? (Acts
1:8; Revelation 2:13)
VIII. Am I determined to be a
more fruitful winner of souls for Him
Who saved me by His grace, and Who
is soon coming to take me to Himself?
(Matthew 4:19; I Corinthians 9:19-
23)
IX. Am I resolving to be morehelpful to the household of faith by
commending more and condemning
less, by giving more and expecting less,
by working more and shirking less,
by remembering more and forgetting
less, and by loving more and despising
less? (Ephesians 4:31-32; I Peter
1:22; I John 3:16)
X. Am I going to learn more about
freedom from worry by taking every-
thing in prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving to God and making my
requests known unto Him? (Philip-
pians 4:6; I Peter 5:7; Luke 18:1)
Some New Year Questions
For The Unbeliever
AS another year with its 365
glorious days opens before you,
we wish to help you to receive the
utmost benefit and blessing from as
many of the days as it shall be your
privilege to live through.
One of the most effective ways in
which we can do this, is to propound
a few searching, personal questions
and by urging you to answer them as
in the presence of God.
I. Are you aware of the fact that
you are not a Christian? Can it not
be said of you as of one of old: "Thou
hast neither part nor lot in this mat-
ter: for thy heart is not right in the
sight of God."? (Acts 8:21)
II. Do you realize that as an un-
saved person you are on perishing
ground? The Lord Jesus said-"he
that believeth not shall be damned."
(Mark 16:16)
III. Did you not have several warn-
ings regarding the uncertainty of life
during the past year-when that ac-
cident occurred, or during that siege
of illness, or when you were bereaved
of that friend? "For God speaketh
once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth
it not." (Job 33:14-30)
IV. Were not many opportunities
afforded you of being saved during the
year that is past-when you were
given those tracts-when you attend-
ed those services, or when you were
dealt with personally? The Gospel
of Christ is the power of God unto
salvation to every one that believeth.
(Romans 1:16)V. Didn't you have serious thoughts
of settling this important matter last
year? If you did not use these identi-
cal words, do they not express the
thought you entertained-"Almost
thou persuadest me to be a Chris-
tian"? (Acts 26:28)
VI. Do you intend putting such a
vital matter off from day to day this
year? "Boast not thyself of tomorrow;
for thou knowest not what a day may
bring forth." (Proverbs 27:1)
VII. Has it never occurred to you
that the longer you delay action, the
harder your heart becomes, and the
more difficult it is for you to believe
the gospel? "Today if ye will hear
His voice harden not your heart." (He-
brews 3:15)
VIII. Does it mean nothing to
you that God loves you and that
Christ died and rose again that you
might be saved?
"For God so loved the world, that
He gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not His Son into the
world to condemn the world; but that
the world through Him might be
saved." (John 3:16-17)
IX. Are you going to allow the
fear of man which bringeth a snare
to rob you of the possible joy of the
forgiveness of sins, deliverance from
judgment, the possession of eternal
life and heirship with God?
"Fear ye not the reproach of men,
neither be ye afraid of their revilings."
(Isaiah 51:7)
X. Will you do right now what
God wants you to do, and what all
your Christian friends and relatives
want you to do, and what we think
you yourself really want to do?
Confess with your mouth Jesus as
Lord; and believe in thine heart that,
God hath raised Him from the dead,
and thou shalt be saved. "For with
the heart man believeth unto right-
eousness: and with the mouth con-
fession is made unto salvation." (Ro-
mans 10:9-10)
