Death and Resurrection
"THE sufferings of Christ, and the
glory that should follow." (1 Peter
1:11)
Before the blossoming of Spring
Lies winter, bleak and cold;
There must be stormy clouds
and rain
Before the buds unfold!
There must be showers in the
sky
Before the rainbow's glow;
There must be pruning of the
vines
Before much fruit will grow.
Before the resurrection morn
There stood dark Calvary,
Before the glory came the Cross
With all its agony.
Thru death comes life, thru loss
comes gain,
Then trust, rejoice and sing;
And labor on-ahead there lies
With Christ, eternal Spring!
-Marie L. Olson
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE
RESURRECTION
IF CHRIST be not raised from
the dead:
Prophecy would have failed-for
it was predicted that His body should
see no corruption. (Psalm 16:10)
The apostles would have been
false witnesses-for they said again
and again that He arose from among
the dead.(Acts 2:32)
Preaching would be so much van-
ity-for if there is no resurrection,
people may as well live as they list.
(1 Corinthians 15:19)
Faith would be an empty thing-
for faith in a corpse is valueless for
the remission of sins. (1 Corinthians
15:17)
Christian martyrs could be shown
to have been silly characters-sac-
rificing their lives for believing some-
thing which never occurred. (1 Co-
rinthians 15:18)
Death would be hopeless-for if
Christ did not rise, certainly His
followers will not. (John 14:19)The hope of the Church would be
blasted-for if Christ be not raised,
how can He come again? (1 Corin-
thians 15:23)
Assurance of God's satisfaction
with the atoning sacrifice of Christ
would be an impossibility. (Acts
17:31)
"But now is Christ risen from the
dead, and become the firstfruits of
them that slept. For since by man
came death, by man came also the
resurrection of the dead." (1 corin-
thians 15:20-21)
HALLELUJAH! CHRIST AROSE!
SOME EASTER THOUGHTS
lIT ITHOUT doubt, t h e bodily
ressurrection of the Lord Jesus
Christ is the keystone in the arch of
truth.
Consider the fact that He said. He
would rise from the dead:
"Behold, we go up to Jerusalem;
and the Son of man shall be betrayed
unto the chief priests and unto the
scribes, and they shall condemn him
to death, and shall deliver Him to
the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge,
and to crucify Him; and the third day
He shall rise again." (Matt. 20:18-19)
And He did rise again:
"He is not here: for He is risen, as
He said. Come, see the place where
the Lord lay." (Matt. 28:6)
"But now is Christ risen from the
dead, and become the first fruits of
them that slept." (1 Cor. 15:20)
The tremendous importance of the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ
can be seen in the following facts:
(1) His resurrection is a vital feature
of the Gospel:
"For I have delivered unto you
first of all that which I also received,
how that Christ died for our sins ac-
cording to the Scriptures; and that
He was buried, and that He rose again
the third day according to the Scrip-
tures." (1 Cor. 15:3-4)
"Remember that Jesus Christ of
the seed of David was raised from
the dead according to my gospel."
(2 Tim. 2:8)
(2) His resurrection is necessary to
our salvation:
"And if Christ be not raised, your
faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.'
(1 Cor. 15:17)
"That if thou shalt confess with
thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath
raised Him from the dead, thou shalt
be saved." (Rom. 10:9)(3) His resurrection is necessary to
our justification:
The promise is that righteousness
shall be imputed to us "if we believe
on Him that raised up Jesus our Lord
from the dead; Who was delivered
for our offences, and was raised again
for our justification." (Rom. 4:24-25)
(4) His resurrection is necessary to
our fruitfulness:
"Wherefore, my brethren, ye also
are become dead to the law by the
body of Christ; that ye should be
married to another, even to Him who
is raised from the dead, that we should
bring forth fruit unto God." (Rom.
7:4)
(5) His resurrection is necessary to
our consecration:
"For the love of Christ constraineth
us; because we thus judge, that if
one died for all, then were all dead:
and that He died for all, that they
which live should not henceforth live
unto themselves, but unto Him which
died for them, and rose again." (2 Cor.
5:14-15)
(6) His resurrection is necessary to
our security:
"Who is he that condemneth? It
is Christ that died, yea rather, that
is risen again, who is even at the
right hand of God, who also maketh
intercession for us." (Rom. 8:34)
"Wherefore He is able also to save
them to the uttermost that come unto
God by Him, seeing He ever liveth
to make intercession for them." (Heb.
7:25)
(7) His resurrection is necessary to
our resurrection:
"For if we believe that Jesus died
and rose again, even so them also
which sleep in Jesus will God bring
with Him." (1 Thess. 4:14)
"For our conversation is in heaven;
from whence also we look for the
Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who
shall change our vile body, that it
may be fashioned like unto His glor-
ious body, according to the working
whereby He is able to subdue all
things unto himself." (Phil. 3:20-21)
The Saviour Himself said: "Thus
it is written, and thus it behoved
Christ to suffer, and to rise from the
dead the third day: And that repen-
tance and remission of sins should
be preached in His name among all
nations, beginning a t Jerusalem."
(Luke 24:46-47)
What does a crucified, buried,
risen, exalted and glorified Saviour
mean to you?
