LeTourneau Tech Graduates 95 Students at Annual Graduation Ceremony in LeTourneau
Dome on May 31. Dr. V. R. Edman, President Wheaton College and R. G. LeTourneau Speak.them that the plant and school should
be located in Longview.
For several months he traveled
with R.G. and finally convinced both
him and Mrs. LeTourneau that they
should take a look at Longview.
While flying over the city, Mrs. Le-
Tourneau looked down and saw the
grounds and buildings which had
been used as the Harmon General
Hospital during the war and which
had been abandoned by the govern-
ment after the war. She remarked
that this would be a wonderful site
for a school. Commander Estes re-
plied, "If you will convince R.G.
that he should locate the new plant
here, I will get the government to
turn that property over to you for
a school."
From that moment on, the LeTour-neau Technical Institute began to
take shape.
Mr. LeTourneau agreed to locate
the plant in Longview if he could
purchase 10,000 acres of land to use
as a proving ground for his ma-
chinery and if he could obtain the
Harmon General Hospital ground
and buildings for the LeTourneau
Technical Institute.
Commander Estes arranged for the
purchase of the land and obtained
an agreement with the government
for the purchase of the hospital. The
government sold the hospital to
the Institute with the provision that
the college would give veterans pref-
erence as students.
And so, the LeTourneau Technical
Institute became a reality.LeTourneau Tech's
