The railroads have very unhappily
watched the trucks take the business
away from them. Probably trucks
have less investment, but a big fac-
tor is their ability to be more flex-
ible and handle shipments from door
to door, in many cases saving the
handlings - unloading from a truck
to the rail car and from the rail car
to a truck at the other end. Some
of the railroads are now handling
these shipments piggy-back. In other
words, back the trailer right on the
rail car and unhook the truck and
at the other end a similar truck
hooks on and drives off delivering
anywhere in the vicinity. This is a
big step in the right direction, but
if you make such a change in a sys-
tem, it always takes a lot of time,
and money too, to get people educat-

now being advocated by up and com-
ing railroads.
There is one thing we must admit.
Railroads are tied into such a vast
system covering a whole continent
that keeping up with the times and
making changes is a far more diffi-
cult problem for them than anyone
else. There's a lot of resistance to
overcome when you make changes.

balking at the automobile and the
