The GC-500
h . LeTro-crane
A recent NOW article told of the
revolution in the shipping industry.
Demands placed on industry for fast-
er movement of products led to in-
creased use of containers and piggy-
back.
Major port facilities of the world
have been forced to install huge
cranes for the specific purpose of
handling heavy containerized cargo.
The cranes that have been used on
docks for many years were not de-
signed to handle the heavier cargo.
Another problem was that cranes
designed specifically for containers
are not functional- for general and
bulk cargo. Also, the weight of these
huge cranes, and 'the distribution of
this weight over small areas, often
prove too much for the load bearing
capabilities of present docks. New
docks were required OR a different
type crane had to be found.
A LeTourneau GC-500 LeTro-
crane has demonstrated unique capa-
bilities for the Port of Philadelphia.
The crane is huge (15 stories high)
and is, therefore, able to handle
containerized shipments. Yet the
crane is versatile, it also handles
general cargo and can be fitted with
a clamshell for bulk cargo such as
grain.
This huge crane can lift 40 tons at
a 120 foot reach or 75 tons at a 75
foot reach. The crane itself weighs
almost 710,000 pounds. The tremen-
dous weight is, however, distributed
over a much wider area than is us-
ually possible on cranes of this size
because the weight rides on eight
tires, each 98 inches in diameter. Be-
cause the weight is distributed over
a wider area, the GC-500 LeTro-crane
can be operated on many existing
dock facilities.
Cranes of this size are usually de-
signed to operate on rails. With the
GC-500, four of the wheels are
powered with electric drive. The
power is in the electric motor in the
wheel itself. Since the crane does not
ride on rails it has been designed for-
II
steering. When traveling, the huge
machine can be steered as much as
10 degrees. When stationary, out-
riggers can be lowered and the wheels
turned as much as 90 degrees.
Because the GC-500 is not restrict-
ed to rails it can move from one side
of the dock to another, from one
dock to another or from the dock to
a nearby storage area.
The GC-500 LeTro-crane adds an-
other dimension to the word versa-
tility as this word pertains to the
shipping industry. It is one answer
in the search for a better way.
There is, however, one area in
which a search for a new way is not
only unnecessary but actually detri-
mental and that is the way for man
to approach God. In the Bible, St.
John 14:6, Jesus is quoted saying: "I
am the way, the truth, and the life.
No man cometh unto the father but'I 3 E an~
by me." It has been characteristic of
man to seek ways by which he might
justify himself through his own
works but the words quoted make it
very clear that man's salvation rests
solely in personal faith in Jesus
Christ. To anyone who will come in
this way the encouraging words of
the Savior are: "Him that cometh un-
to me, I will in no wise cast out."
