were Jewish girls from Salon-
ika, Greece, who had been ster-
ilized by Nazi doctors at the
Oswiecim concentration camp.
The doctor, who is a fervent
advocate of Zionism, said she
had encountered no obstacles
or difficulties, in working with
the victims. She reported that
only one case of a fraudulent
claim had come to her atten-
tion, and then commented that
from her experience as a health
officer she believed that among
the Germans the proportiorr of
fraudulent claims would have
been greater.
Explaining her attitude to-
ward the Jews, Dr. Schaeffer,
who was the first German to
go to Israel on an official Bonn
Government mission, but who
visited Israel last year in a
private capacity, said that “we
Germans should keep begging
for forgiveness (of the Jews)
with contrition in our hearts,
and we must strive to make a-
mends to the best of our abil-
ity.” Israel, she added, has ev-
ery right to “repulse us, but it
cannot keep us from trying
over and over again.”

90 Jews Found Eligible
For Compensation As
Nazi "Guinea Pigs"
Dusseldorg (JTA)—Dr. Laura
Schaeffer, physician and mu-
nicipal health officer in this
area, returned here this week
after a ten-week stay in Israel
during which she examined a
number of Jewish victims of
Nazi pseudo-scientific and “hu-
man guinea pig” experiments.
Dr. Schaeffer, a Christian
who taught herself Hebrew in
the small town where she grew
up without having knwn Jews,
certified some 90 injured or in-
capacitated survivors of the
Nazis’ grisly experiments as
eligible for lump sum compen-
sation payments from the Ger-

B’NAI B’RITH TO SEEK
MATERIALS ON AMERICAN
JEWISH HISTORY
Washington (JTA)— A na-
tionwide search for historical
source materials which will
shed light on American Jew-
ish history from 1654 to the
present day will be undertaken
this year by members of the
B'nai B'rith through their local
lodges and chapters, it was
disclosed here today by Philip
M. Klutznick, president of
B'nai B'rith.
The history project is one
phase of the B'nai B'rith par-
ticipation in the celebration
this year marking the 300th
anniversary of the first settle-
ment of Jews on the Atlantic
seaboard. B'nai B'rith is co-
operating with the American
Jewish Tercentenary Commit-
tee in this celebration.
Members throughout the
country are being urged to
search for minute books of the
first meetings of lodges and
chapters. manuscripts, photo-
graphs, paintings, documents
and other historic records, and
to send them to B'nai B'rith
headquarters here. A special
committee will arrange a sig-
nificant collection of these
American Jewish history rec-
ords for display in the exhibit
hall of the B'nai B'rith build-
ing which will be erected in
the nation's capital.

ANTI-SEMITE SENTENCED IN
IOWA FOB PASTING VP
ANTI-JEWISH SIGNS
Des Moines (JTA)—A court
in Davenport this week sen-
tenced Robert Milner, after he
confessed putting up anti-Jew-
ish signs in Davenport and in
Rock Island and Moline, Ill.
The sentence was suspended.
Edward Reed Fields, who
confessed to having pasted up
similar signs in Rock Island,
1 denied having had anything to
do with the Davenport inci-
dent. The police in the Iowa
city, lacking jurisdiction, re-
leased Fields. It is doubtful
whether the Illinois authorities
will attempt to extradite him,
since the offense is considered
a misdemeanor.
The two were apprehended
by Davenport police after the
Chicago office of the B’nai
B’rith Anti-Defamation League
supplied them with informa-
tion on suspects who had been
carrying on anti-Semitic pro-
paganda in the area. The stick-
ers were found pasted on Jew-
. ish-owned streets in the three
cities February 20, just as the
nation prepared to celebrate
Brotherhood Week. The stick-
ers read, “This place owned by
I Jews,” and "Anti-Jewish Week
I February 21-28.”
