Jewish law is a violation of a
biblical commandment.
A brith must be held only
during the daytime.
A brith may be performer
successfully in the hospital or
at home.
A Minyan— a quorum of ten
men —although preferable is not
required.
It is fitting to invite your
Rabbi to attend the brith to add
the dignity of his presence at
our Simcha
There is no nobler way to
-tart your son on his long life,
than with such a solemn and
meaningful ceremony. The
brith is a happy occasion. It
should be invested with beauty,
dignity and joyfulness in which
the sanctity of Jewish tradition
is shared by all those who par
ti cipate in it.
There are special regulations
pertaining to the redemption of
the first born (Pidyon ha-ben)
and adopted children. For com-
petent guidance, consult your

Ritual < ircumcision is called
by tin Hebrew name "Brith
Milal" (Ihe (ovenant of ( ir
cumcision) or merely brith
(bris). This is based on the
biblical ace ount of the coyenant
child and his family. Honors
are extended to members of the
family and friends, from whom
are chosen the Sandek and other
participants in the ceremony.
The brith, to be performed
properly, should be done by
a Mohel. It is of course of the
utmost importance that the of-
ficiant at this religious cere-
nony should be an observant
Jew and fully conversant with
the Jewish laws involved in a
brith. In addition, he should be
well trained, adept and com-
petent in this specialty. The
certified Mohel is, indeed, a
specialist in this field.
Your child should have the
ooportunity of beginning life
in the sacred tradition of his
ancestors. With a Mohel of-
ficating at this ceremony, the
circumcision becomes not only
a surgical operation but also
indeed a means of Jew ish iden-
tity. sanctified by religion, tra-
dition and history.
The circumcison of a normal
healthy child must be held on
the eighth day after his brith,
even if that day be a sabbath or
holiday even Yom Kippur.
(care should be taken that the
sanctity of the Sabbath or holi-
day be maintain at all times.)
If the child is delivered by
caesarian section, however, the
brith may not be held on the
~abbath or holiday
A brith must nerer be held
before the eighth day.
A child who has been cir
< umcised inadvertently before
the eighth day is not considered
ritually circumcised. This is an
error that can and should be
corrected. For the proper pro-
