Biblical mind did not draw a
dividing line between the
spoken word and the world of
realities. To the Bible, as to the
truly religious person, a word
not only has absolute value and
meaning, it also has dimension-
al shape and form. It is with
words that God created this
world, and it is by words
spoken in sincerity, in devotion,
in piety that this world moves
forward and is sustained.
The Bible does not believe
in a non-comittal flirtation with
the mere beauty of expression-
in Biblical terminology a word
and an act is synonymous.
To the Biblical mind “right”

In Giving, We Thank
In proclaiming this beautiful
custom of Thanksgiving, our
antecedents in America have re-
vealed to us the immense mea-
sure of their faculty of thank-
fulness. It can be no mere acci-
dent that of all other nations in
the world, only America has
proclaimed the celebration of
Thanksgiving as a legal holi-
day for all its inhabitants. And
those who have first formulated
this idea could have been none
other than the Pilgrims, a
group of people so strongly
imbued with the noble sense of
gratitude. It was they whose
life was so deeply permeated
righteousness, “truth” stands
for acts of faith, and, least of
all, is “faith” an abstract term,
it stands for good deeds and
practice. Only by the measure
of a person’s actions and be-
havior, his modesty, by his
kindness, by his manner of
sharing his material surplus, do
we witness the magnitude of
the person’s grateful mind.
Thus, thanks and giving is an
inseparable twin, a religious
compound of the abstract and
the concrete, of the hidden and
the revealed.

who coined the name of the
holiday in the very spirit of the
Bible.
Because only in Biblical ter-
minology can one combine the
tangible term “give” with the
intangible term of “thanks,”
which is, most of the time,
merely an utterance of the lips
and more often than not merely
an attitude, a feeling, a thought.
Only in Biblical language
can one use the composite of
“thanks” and “giving,” forming
a unity out of something which
is hidden and of that which is
evident. While “thanks” is a
condition, a frame of mind en-
closed in the person’s heart of
mind, and known to him alone,
it is only in the Biblical frame
of thought that thanks can
take on shape and form. that
it can become something con-
crete, something you take in
your hand and pass on from one
person to the other. It is only
in Biblical terms of reference
that “thanks,” like “faith” or
“blessing,” become tangible re-
alities.
Unlike our time, which, by
the theory of semantics, is ex-
cused for saying words it does
not mean and thus be so often
so terribly misunderstood, the
