characteristics of democratic Gov-
ernment in Israel?”
Gradually, his searching began
to become more pointed. “Are con-
crete steps being taken to achieve
equal rights for women? Does this
also include change in social status
and free love?”
Finally, he probed about our
military forces—conscription, re-
serve service, quality of leader-
ship, fighting spirit of the sol-
diers.

Actually, I didn't know which
of us was interviewing the other.
We showed a mutual inquisitive-
ness and found we were alike in
many respects. It was hard to ac-
cept that just a few weeks ago
man stood opposite his brother,
ready to kill.
We were seated in a small cafe
in Jerusalem, the city where we
had both lived for a generation.
We were born in Israel, almost in
the same place—he in Jaffa, and I
in Tel Aviv. Our formal educa-
tion is also along the same lines—
he is a Political Science student at
Oxford and I majored in the same
subject at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. Even our profes-
sions are similar—he is the editor
of a student magazine to which
he occasionally also contributes, I
am a journalist.

Despite all this, we had never
met until last week and we viewed
each other with intense curiosity.
The reason—I am an Israeli and
he, Abd al Kadr Yashin, a Pales-
tinian refugee, resident of the Old
City and a Jordanian.
We met by chance, on Mamilla
Road, half an hour after he had
left the Old City for the first time
to visit the Jewish State. He
hadn’t as yet had an opportunity
to tour the New City but already
had stopped at a shop entrance
and tried to begin a conversation
with the owner.
“What is the daily wage of an
Israeli worker? What is the price
of a loaf of bread? How many in-
habitants are there in Jerusalem?”
I rescued the bewildered shop-
keeper from the barrage of ques-

tions and took the task upon my-
self—Abd al Kadr agreed imme-
diately to my one stipulation—an
open and frank discussion with
answers to everything asked.
SHOCKING REVELATIONS
Mostly he was concerned with
facts. He wanted to bridge gaps of
ignorance and to check on the
reliability of what he already
knew about Israel.
We talked while driving round
in my car. He was astounded that
we had no veiled women.
“I thought that at least the
women of the Eastern groups
would be veiled.” He was sur-
prised that the city was so little
damaged from all the heavy shell-
ing and remarked that we had
very few tall buildings. The Uni-
versity campus impressed him
“This is a beautiful University
in Europe.”
“But this is not Europe,” I
pointed out.
“Of course, from a geographi-
cal viewpoint.”
Near the Social Science build-
ing he enquired, “Do you think it
would be possible for me to con-
tinue my studies here?”
Afterwards he interrogated me
non-stop. “Until what age is there
compulsory education? W’hat is
the educational level of women?
What is the difference in educa-
tional levels between the Jewish
and Arab communities? Is it true
that Arabs are allowed to sene in
the Army? What about the
Druzes? W’hat about Arab em-
ployment in Government institu-
