B’nai B’rith men, women, and
children are banding together in
an all-out campaign to aid the vic-
tims of Hurricane Beulah that
wrecked such havoc and destruc-
tion on South Texas, according to
an announcement by Sidney Bors-
chow, El Paso, Texas, President
of District Grand Lodge Number
Seven, B’nai B’rith.
The concerted effort, under the
chairmanship of Al C. Schlosser,
is the “B’nai B’rith District Seven
Hurricane Beulah Rehabilitation
Fund” and an appeal for money
has already gone out to 10,000
male B’nai B’rith members in the
105 lodges in cities covering the
seven states of Alabama, Louisi-
ana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Ten-
nessee and Arkansas.
“We were5 requested by our
two B’nai B’rith Lodges in South
Texas at McAllen and Browns-
ville to render all possible aid as
soon as possible for the needy and
destitute citizens,” Schlosser said.
“We are hoping to raise n the vi-
cinity of $50,000 in cash plus
give other assistance through the
help of the B’nai B’rith women

“The New Morality” will be the
subject of the next presentation
in the Rice University Chapel Lec-
ture Series, to be delivered by Dr.
James Sellers, Dean of the Di-
vinity School and Professor of
Christian Ethics and Theology at
Vanderbilt University. His lecture
is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thurs-
day, October 12, in the Rice
Memorial Chapel, and will be
open to the public without charge.
A Methodist lay-man, Dean
Sellers lists as his current re-
search and teaching interests as a
theological appraisal of American
manners and morals. He is plan-
ning a seminar this year on
“Christian Ethics and the Ameri-
can Character.” He is also con-
ducting a study of the theological
significance of the thoughts of
18th century French politician-
philosopher Montesquieu.
Dean Sellers received a B.E.E.
degree from the Georgia Institute
of Technology (1947), an M.S.
from Florida State University
(1952), and a Ph.D. from Van-
derbilt University (1958).

The committee assisting Schlos-
ser includes chairmen from every
state as well as Ben Wainer,
Brownsville; Lewis Frapart, Mc-
Allen; Jerry J. Ribnick, Lou Solo-
mon, Billy Goldberg, and Mel
Lustgarten, all of Houston. Al-
ready contributions have begun to
pour in from the B’nai B’rith
Lodges and from individuals in
the seven state area.
The B’nai B’rith Supreme
Lodge immediately sent a check
from the Emergency Relief Fund.
Borschow, on behalf of B’nai
B’rith, present the check for
$1000 to the Hurricane Beulah
Rehabilitation Fund.
B’nai B’rith Women in District
Seven are collecting bedsheets,
towels, diapers, blankets, etc, for
the Hurricane and flood victims.
Mrs. Edis Parkans, Houston, is
president of the B’nai B’rith Wom-
en, District Seven.
The youth are helping too.
B’nai B’rith Youth Organization,
for boys and girls from 14 to 18
years of age, is helping in this
mammoth effort by collecting
clothing, food and linens and send-
ing them directly to the Salvation
Army Depot in McAllen.
B’nai B’rith, America’s largest
and oldest Jewish Service Organi-
zation, founded in 1843, is con-
tinuing its tradition of service of
emergency. aid to disaster victims.
The list includes the Chicago Fire
(1871), Johnstown Flood (1899),
Irish Famine (1903), San Fran-
cisco Earthquake (1906), Kishi-
nev pogram (1905), Balkan
Wars (1912-1913), Japanese
Earthquake (1923), floods in
Winnipeg (1950), and more re-
cently helping Hurricane victims
in Cameron, La. in 1957, New-
Orleans in 1963.
