On the 184th anniversary of our
Nation’s independence, our new 50-star
flag is surrounded by pictures of Ameri-
can Catholics who have made great con-
tributions to the welfare of our land. A
signer of the Declaration of Independ-
ence, the first American bishop, the Fa-
ther of the American Navy, a great car-
dinal and patriot, th founder of the
American parochial school system, a
great Chief Justice — they are repre-
sentative of American Catholic men and
women who, in positions of prominence
or in humble tasks, have lived the ad-
monition given by the bishops of the
United States at the First Council of
Baltimore in 1852. They said: “Show
your attachment to the institutions of
our beloved country by prompt com-
pliance with all their requirements, and
by the cautious jealousy with which you
guard against the least deviation from
the rules which they prescribe for .the
maintenance of public order and private
rights.”
