Home court advantage: Eagle Coliseum still on schedule
By Quinten Boyd
Staff Writer
ExcusS Rusk ISD superin-
tendent Dr. Jim Largent if he
seems to have a perma-smile
on his face.
He's excited considering
that he has a volleyball team
in the playoffs, a football
team on the verge of making
the playoffs and now, a brand
new coliseum style venue that
is getting closer and closer to
completion.
Excitement about the con-
struction of Eagle Coliseum
has him moré than a little
excited.
"This (Eagle Coliseum) hit
at j ust the right time with the
success of our volleyball and
football teams,'' Dr. Largent
said. "Anything like this
will bring in excitement and
will help build our athletic
program, especially that of
our volleyball and basketball
teams."
Work progresses steadily on
Eagle Coliseum, the new bas-
ketball and volleyball venue
at Rusk High School. When
finished, it will replace the
original gymnasium, which
was built in 1968.
The new coliseum will hold
roughly 1200 people. The en-
trance, which will be primarily
glass and stucco and will lead
directly into the gym, is only
the tip of the iceberg.
"Once you get into the en-
trance, you're in the gym,"
Dr. Largent said. "There will
be a railing around the mez-
zanine level where the court
will be. Unlike our current
gym, fans won't be right on
the floor, but they will be in
a good place to See the action.
Plus, it's good for the safety of
fans and players.
Dr. Largent said that the
ideft for the look of Eagle
Coliseum came from several
college and university gyms
as well as I hree high school
gyms: Madisonville, Woden
and Tatum.
"We tried to take the best
from each one of those gyms
in order to design our own
building and get the look we
wanted," he said.
The coliseum will have
individual stadium seats
and a suspended, four-sided
scoreboard in addition to floor
mounted basketball goals
similar to those Used in college
and the NBA. The seating will
be beneficial to fans, according
to Dr. Largent.
"The slope on the bleach-
ers is steeper than it would
be in most gyms," he said.
"This means that the fans are
closer to the floor and will be
able to see without heads in
the way."
Flooring in the gym will
consist of terrazzo flooring, a
faux- marble flooring material,
and sealed concrete, which Dr.
Largent says is low mainte-
nance: and easy to clean.
There will be four locker
rooms: a boys and girls' sub-
varsity locker room, which
will hold 40 lockers each and
a boys and girls'varsity locker
room, which will hold 20 lock-
ers each. All locker rooms will
have shower/bathroom space
as well as accommodate play-
ers and coaches.
Behind the main gym will
be a half-court practice gym
with four goals. Dr, Largent
said that was something he
really wanted to see as part
of the project.
"I really wanted this extra
gym space for a practice
court," he said. "There are a
lot more goals now between
here, the main gym and our
current gym, which will help
our program as a whole "
Eagle Coliseum will also
become the new headquarters
for the district technology
center and will also hold a
hospitality room for officials
and visitors.
Dr. Largent says that the
coliseum shouldbe completed
in time for district basketball
in January.
"All these guys working on
construction are working as
hard as they can to meet that
goal (of opening in January).
Dr. Largent said.
Once Eagle Coliseum opens,
he sees many more opportuni-
ties for the new venue.

the finished roof work and the four-sided scoreboard.
"We hope to be a tournament
and playoff venue for both
basketball and volleyball," he
said. "We're, pretty centrally
located for this area of East
Texas and we feel hke the
coliseum will be great to host
games from 3Aon down."
Dr. Largent also said that he
hopes that the community will
give Eagle Coliseum a sense
of mystique like those seen at
big-time basketball venues.
"The coaches are already
excited and chomping at the
bit to get in the new gym," he
said. "The kids will be proud
to call this court home and
our entire community will be
proud of the coliseum.
"I hope with all of that, the
way the gym is set up and a
strong atmosphere, we'll have
a home court advantage."
