Volunteer Council for the Rusk State

Free blood sugar and
pressure tests are provided
Shirley Reese RN for the HOPE
Partners in Health program is at the
courthouse in Rusk every Thursday
from 9 a.m. to noon to provide free
blood sugar and blood pressure test-
ing. The sen/ice is provided by the
Partners in Health Program of HOPE
Inc. in Jacksonville. For additional

Dedication is Nov. 8
The SCV Camp 2009 Cross of
St. Andrews at Alto will dedicate two
Confederate markers at Fields Chapel
Cemetery in Anderson County at 2
p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Fields Chapel
is on U.S. Highway 84 approximately
seven miles west of Maydelle.
Camp Commander Ken McClure
will be in the charge of the troops
salute to the Confederate veterans'
new markers. Also a roll call will be
given for the 18 known Confederate
veterans.
The new markers for Spencer
Tomlin Hassell and George Washing-
ton Croft were recently obtained and
placed in the cemetery. The stone for
Mr. Croft will be the first ever for his
unmarked grave that only had an iron
ore rock. Arifle volley and cannon shot
will be fired in their honor. Members of
both families will answer roll calls.
The public is invited to attend this
marker dedication.

ate School is the first student at the school to
read and test on five of the Texas Bluebonnet
books. For her accomplishment she received
a free pizza.
RUSK POLICE SAY
Burglaries cease
Home burglaries and car
thefts seem to have stopped in
the Rusk area, said Assistant
Chief Roy Cavazoz.
"We don't know exactly
what to attribute this to," Mr.
Cavazoz said. -However, we do
know that one of the suspects
we were watching moved out
of town and maybe some of
the oneá we were questioning
decided to stop.
A Nacogdoches man was ar-
rested and charged him with
failure to identify himself after
officers received a complaint
that a black man was walking
around the neighborhood.
The man wag returned to
Nacogdoches county to face
burglary charges, Mr. Cavazoz
said.
Also, local police are inves-
tigating an incident in which
two females, one ajuvenile and
the other an adult threw bricks
through vehicle windows. The
juvenile was arrested and a
warrant has been issued for
the arrest of the adult.
Mr. Cavazoz said a female
hving at the Pine Meadow
Apartments on U.S. Highway
84 W had a verbal altercation
with five females in Jackson-
ville. The Jacksonville women
came to Rusk to continue the
altercation and the car win-
dows were broken when two of
the Jacksonville women alleg-
edly threw bricks through the
vehicle windows.
Man stabbed in neck
Assailant wanted Laneville man's cash
ALaneville man was assault-
ed after he Cashed his payroll
check at Max Thomason's Bad
Bond business in Rusk.
Lt. Chris White said Monday
that Paul James of Lanevillle
cashedhispayrollcheck around
5 p.m. Oct. 31. When he went
into the bad bond business an-
other man was in there.
Mr. James reported that the
man watchedhim and then left.
After Mr. James got back into
his vehicle and started home
he saw he was being followed.
A pickup truck signaled him to
stop on CR 1204 at Reklaw. he
pulled over and the same white
male who had been at the bad
bondsman's office approached
his vehicle asking for money.
He went back to his pickup
truck and came back with a
brown handled knife with a
six inch blade, H© stabbed Mr.
James on the right side of his
neck. They fought over the
knife and then the man ran.
Mr. James followed the man to
Rusk and went to the sheriff's
office for help.
Officers Went to Mr. Thoma-
son's office and video footage
helped with identification of
the suspect. Justice ofthePeace
TeresaPhiferissuedthewarant
for the arrest of Chance Snively
of Rusk. Mr. Snively came into
the sheriff's office and turned
himself in on Saturday Nov.
1. He has been charged with
aggravated assault as he did
not take any money from Mr.
James. He is being held in the
Cherokee County Jad in lieu of
posting $25,000 bond.
Investigating the incident

Arson under investigation
The Cherokee County
Sheriff's Department is
investigating an arson
incident.
Lt. Chris White said a
suspect, identified as Ricky
Allen of Cuney, has been
charged with second degree
arson.
Mr. Allen allegedly went
to the home of Mitchell Cau-
ley CR 3407, Jacksonville,
at approximately 8 p.m.
Sunday and threw a can of
gasohne through a window.
There was a hghted rag
stuffed into the spout
The gasoline ignited the
home and Mr. Cauley was
able to get it extinguished.
Lt. White said the two
men had a dispute under-
way and the incident was a
result of that dispute.
