Faltering national economy makes impact
on retail sales in Cherokee County's cities
Sales tax collections for
this reporting period are
starting to show the na-
tional downturn in the:
economy.
In the chart below, the
second and third columns
compare the retail sales in
September 2008 and Sep-
tember 2007.
Only Wells is posting an
increase in sales. New Sum-
mer field leads the decline

with 54.22 percent followed
by Alto, 20.95 percent and
Busk, 6.66 percent.
The largest retail center
in the county, Jackson-
ville, is down almost four
percent.
Jacksonville's retail sales
have bounced up and down
throughout 2008. In the
last column in the chart
below, year-to-date sales
tax figures are compared
for 2008 and 2007. Jack-
sonville, with almost pt
million in retail sales, is
ahead of 2007 Sales by 1.68
percent.
The closing of Bob Francis
Ford and the loss of sales
tax income will not show
up on retail sales figures
until February and March
2009.
Statewide, October sales
tax collections are running
5.2 percent ahead of Octo-
ber 2007.
State Comptroller Susan
Combs distributed $548.3
million in November to
cities, counties, transit sys-
tems and special purpose
taxing districts.
Taxes represent retail
purchases made by con-
sumers in September and
remitted to the comptrol-
ler's office in October.
