MRS. BERTA BUCKINGHAM

Buckingham, 78, formerly
of Jacksonville was at 4 p.m.
Friday, March 20, at Earle's
Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs Buckingham died on
March 17. She was born on
Aug. 1, 1930, in Nebraska.
Her first marriage was to
Harold Willis. She was pre-
ceded in death by a newborn
son, Harold Lee Willis; and
her second husband, James
Buckingham in 1998.
While hving at the Clair -
mont nursing home in Tyler,
she earned the gold medal
during the Senior Olympics
three years consecutively for
wheelchair races.

was at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at
Central Baptist Church Burial
was in Still Waters Memorial
Garden.
Mr. Sheffield died March 17.
He was born May 17, 1924, in
Blox, near Kirbyville. He at-
tended Kirbyville High School
where he was a four sport
letterman. As a senior he was
selected to play in the Texas-
Louisiana State All-Star game
of 1941.
His college football career
at Lamar Junior College was
interrupted in 1942 when he
joined the Navy. He saw active
duty in the Pacific during World
War II. After his discharge in
1946, hereturnedforhis sopho-
more year at Lamar and was
co-captain of the football team
with Bum Phillip*. I Ic was also
a basketball letterman on the
1946-47 team. That spring he
transferred to Tulane Univer-
sity. Astri-captainSheffieldled
the 1948 team to a 9-1 record.
In December 1949, heplayedin
the Blue-Gray game, followed
by the first Senior Bowl game
in January 1950.
Upon graduation from Tlilane
University he became B team
football coach at Beaumont
High School. He became head
coach the following year and
in 1956 won the first (list riel
championship in 22 years.
In 1958, Coach Bum Phil-
hps persuaded him to come to
Jacksonville. Coach Sheffield
assumed head coaching duties
in 1959 after Coach Phillips'
departure.
In 1962, he coached in the
Texas High School All-Star
Game. Coach Sheffield re-
entered coaching in 1979 as
head coach of the eighth grade
in Henderson.

He was born Sept. 19, 1941,
in Silsbee to Ashley and Ehse
Carrell Gore. He hved in Fort
Worth and in the Rivercrest
community near Lufkin for
many years.
He was a Pentecostal and

She was born March 9, 1917,
in Jacksonville to Sam Boles
and Gussie Mae Cunningham
Boles.
Miss Boles was a member of
the Jacksonville First Baptist
Church, graduate of Jackson-
ville High School, received her
Master's Degree at Stephen
F. Austin University a Pink
Lady and a member of Delta
Kappa Gamma Sorority. She
was recently honored as being
the oldest member of First
Baptist Church, where she
taught Sunday school in the
beginner's class for more than
50 years.
She taught school 44year s, 35
of which were in Jacksonville.
Miss Boles retired in 1983 and
was active in the RetiredTeach-
ers Association. Survivors
include cousins Dolores Mc-
Cord of Jacksonville. Gordon
Nunn of Galveston, Tony and
Jerrie Sue Cleaver of Killeen,

and deacon of Central Baptist
Church for 51 years.
Preceding him in death were
his parents, K. P. and Willie
Sheffield; two sisters, Lillian
Singletary Walker and Maijo-
rie Lazenby; and two brother s,
Preston Sheffield and William
P. Sheffield.
He is survived by his wife of
58 years. Betty Braden Shef-
field of Jacksonville; son, Rich-

19. He was born Oct. 22, 1931,
in Lufkin to Jonas Ruben and
Be ssie Mae Enghsh Westbrook.
He graduated from Rusk High
School andjoined the Air Force,
serving during the Korean War.
He attended Stephen F. Austin
State University in Nacogdo-
ches andbegan work at Citizens
State Bank in Rusk as cashier
and later as vice-president. He
moved to Huntington where he
wasemployedasvice-pre sident
at the Huntington State Bank
for two years, then returned
to Citizens Bank. He later
was named manager and chief
financial officerofthe Cherokee
County Teachers Credit Union
until his retirement in 1994. He
was commander of the National
Guard Unit in Rusk, president
of the Lions Club, anddeaeon at
the First Baptist Church. He
owned and operated We stbr ook
Aluminum Windows andDoors
for a number of year s before his
retirement in 1994.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his first wife,
Joy Dover Westbrook; and
sister, Barbara Ann Felder
Westbrook. Survivors include
his wife. Lana Westbrook; two
sons, Jeffrey Westbrook and
Rodney Duncan; two daugh-
ters, Angie Petersen andBecky
Rodgers; two sisters. Sue Kyle
