Rusk's Cody Glenn reflects on the
Super Bowl

Cody Glenn's rookie season may have ended
just short of a Super Bowl title, but #52 for the
Indianapolis Colts was still proudofthe season
he and his team had in 2009.
"Tough loss today, [but] wehadagreatyear,"
Mr. Glenn said on his Twitter account follow-
ing the 31-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints
Sunday night, "A great rookie year...we have
a class Aorganization, so the climb back to the
lop starts now.''
Mr. Glenn, who played linebacker and on
special teams, actually reported as an eligible
receiver on offense during the game, helping

Cherokee County Commission-
ers voted Monday morning to
re-roof the Jacksonville tax office
at .301 W. Commerce St,
Cost is expected to be $4,500
for 2,900 square feet of 30-year
singles. Contractor will be José
Roofing Co.
The county will pay additional
funds for decking and flashing
if needed.
Other items approved at the
short meeting held in the county
courtroom included the purchase
of timber adjacent to the airport
from David Cooper for $3,000.
This will allow for better runway
height clearance.
County Judge Chris Davis said
"If we purchase the timber then
we will not have to I op the trees.
This will take care of the problem
from now on.''
Commissioners also voted to
seek bids to sell an above ground
fuel storage tank currently lo-
cated at the airport.
Funds derived from the sale
will go for other items needed
at the airport.;
The laying of utility lines in
Precinct 3 was approved.
Robin Parsons was approvedas

County unemployment hits 97

Unemployment rates in the United States, in Texas
and in Bast Texas have been through peaks and val-
leys in the last few months. Job opportunities spring
up while others are taken away.
The trend continues in the most recent numbers,
As the state rate rises, the national rate falls and the
rate in Cherokee County rises.
The unemployment ratefor Cherokee Countyis 9.7,
a 0.3 percent increase from November 2009, the last
month that county numbers were reported.
Nacogdoches County boasted the lowest unemploy-
ment rate in the area at 6.3 percent. Smith County's
rale is 8.0 and Angelina County's rate is 8. t. The rate
in Henderson Countyis 8.5, Rusk County's rate is 8.6
and Trinity County has a rate of 9.0.
Anderson County's unemployment rate is 9.4 and
Houston County has the highest unemployment rate
in the area at 10.5.
Texas reported an unemployment rate of 8.3 in
December, an increase of 0.3 percent from Novem-
ber's numbers. The Department of Labor reported
last Friday that the national rate fell from 10.0 to
9.7 percent.
Area entities are doing their part to make a dent in
the area's unemployment number s. Last week, Fagen
Inc., the company over construction of the biomaSs
plant near Sacul, held a job fair at the Nacogdoches
Workforce Center.

"In all, we had over 300 people come in for the job
fair," said Peggy Muckelroy of NEDCO. "We ended

Rusk's building
permits top $1.5
million in 2009

Building permits totaling $1,546,190 were
issued during 2009 in Rusk.
Permits included several for store renova-
tion to allow for the sale of beer and wine
and the construction of one new business
for that purpose.
Permits totaling $168,000 were issued
for remodeling of existing businesses and
$575,000 for construction of a new beer and
wine retail store and another $19,000 for a
sign perm i I.
Business expansions for the sale of beer
and wine included: J&P Ivwik Stop for an
addition issuedon June 15, $90,000; Skeeters
issued on July 10, $90,000; Runnin' Rudy's
issuedon Aug. 10, $30,000; andPick-N-Pak
issued on Aug. 14. $8,000.
Fat Dog applied for a $575,000 new con-
struction permit on Sept. 1 and a $19,000
sign permit on Oct. 27. Fat Dog opened in
December on U.S. Highway 69. Total cost of
the business was estimated at $1 million.
