any number of spades which In-
elude the king.
Note that the low spade play
the first time the suit is led
caters to the case where North
is dealt the K-x of spades, which
you would not know if you
started the suit by playing the
ace and another spade. This pos-
sibility adds substantially to
your chances of making the
contract.
2. The best method of play is
to win ths spade and lead a low
club from dummy. If South has
the queen, he will presumably
play it, and this will give you
three club tricks Instead of the
two you started with. The de-
fense will then probably cash
two spades and shift to a dia-
mond.
Take the ace, cash the A-K
of hearts and jack of clubs, en-
ter dummy with a trump, and
discard two diamonds on the
A-K of clubs. This method of
plsy succeeds if the trumps are
divided 3-2.
If, when the low club is played
from dummy at trick two,
South also plays low, you have
to assume that he does not have
the queen. In that case, play
the nine. If South has the ten,
the nine will force the queen,
and again you make three club
tricks.
The contract Is not certain by

Dear Heloise:
Here's one for the pet owner
whose dog or cat seems to get
as much of his dinner on the
floor as he does in his tummy.
One of those attractive foam-
backed luncheon mats with the
plastic top makes an excellent
four-footed friend.
The mat is much easier to
clean than the floor, and the dish
won't “walk" while the doggie
