Bad breath usually begins with the breakdown
of food, and can often be managed with good oral
hygiene practices, including daily brushing and floss-
ing.
When the body breaks down leftover food that
collects at the gums or back of the mouth, it released
sulfur compounds and the characteristic bad breath
odor. Flossing helps to remove buildup below the
gums and between teeth. Gently brushing all oral, sur-
faces, including the tongue, cheeks and hard palate
(the “roof’ of the mouth) helps remove food before it
begins to break down.
Sometimes brushing the tongue does not suffi-
ciently cut through a coating of bacteria and a light
scraping is called for. Tongue scrapers are readily
available in stores, but an ordinary spoon can also be
used. Drinking water also helps to clear the mouth of
food and bacteria.
