OVER THE COFFEE CUP
Gloomies Are
Out To Get'cha
By ETHEL wOoDBY '
• Record-Chronicle Women's Editor I
Did you ever get up of a morning, open one eye and I
take a bleary look at the bleak surroundings and say, I
“Oh gloomsday, I wish I could stay abed!” I
Better watch out—the miseries will get you ■
I don’t know how to chase them away, but it does take I
some concentrated effort. You could try pretending by :
jumping out of bed and pasting on a big smile—“Good
morning, you great big wonderful world!”
Trouble is, somebody's sure to say, "What's with you—you sick or
something?"
And you can experiment with a laugh or two. Start with a chuckle
and work it up to a big belly-whopper. This develops the vocal
chords, I'm told. But don't overdo it. People tend to be suspicious
of others who go around laughing at the sunbeams and swatting at
dust particles in the air. d
At work or at home, you could try to find something funny in every I
exasperating experience. This could keep you in stitches, if not a I
straitjacket. J
Sometimes it's utterly impossible to be amused You’ll bump into I
people who are ready to chew you down to size, no matter how sweet I
you try to be The only thing they understand is a growl for a growl, I
saying, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera!" ’
Don't let them get you. Just for the heck of it, why don't you try I
a dig for a snarl and a frown for a scowl. i
The youngsters get the idea that teachers are the worst infected I
with gripitis. Not a funny bone among them, they grumble, having I
been exposed and not realizing it. Besides, they never admit that j
maybe it was they who exposed the teachers. -
Teachers, or those I know, are as nutty as anybody. j
For instance, consider what has been going on at Denton Junior I
High 7th Grade. J
Durwood Tonn, the principal, admits his handwriting isn't the best I
classroom example. The cafeteria cooks complained about the qua- ■
lity of his numerals in cafeteria reports. Impossible to read, they
declared.
The next day, to justify the criticism, his numerals were elemen-
tary school style—box-car size The next day the numerals were so
small a magnifying glass would have helped. Another day the num-
bers were written in long hand.
Each day the cooks wondered what he’d do next, and complained
good naturedly about the problems of dealing with a principal. Then
they received reports with roman numerals (and you know what a
task that is once you get past the first 20 > and to top it off, he sent
one in Egyptian numerals and finally in algebraic notation.
Things had gone far enough; decided the cooks, and it was time for
retaliation. This week’s menu, which they submitted to the principal
for approval, was written in gibberish. It took a nimble brain to
decipher it. Some might say that Tonn couldn’t do it, because he
