When Abraham Lincoln spoke these words, he was recog-
nizing the dangers of a government which does too much
for people.
America was founded and has grown through individual
initiative and private enterprise, but more and more we
have permitted government to do things which we can and
should do ourselves.
Today, private enterprise businesses of practically every
kind and size face the competitive activities of government-
owned businesses: paint factories, cement plants, bakeries,
trucking operations and hundreds of others.
Through such agencies as Tennessee Valley Authority
and the Bonneville Power Administration, government is
steadily increasing its role as a producer of electric power.
Government-owned business not only competes with
private enterprise; it does so with the advantages of no
Federal tax payments, and little or no interest payments.
Ironically, government businesses are operated primarily
with the tax dollars collected from private enterprises
and individuals.
If we are to preserve our free enterprise system and retain
our personal freedoms, we must recognize and speak out
against the increasing dangers of government in business.
