WHAT HAPPENED IN AUSTIN
What the legislature did last week:
HOUSE
• Passed to the Senate bills to make optional the charging of
laboratory fees by state colleges; exempt state banks from pay-
ing the state franchise tax; and exempt from inheritance taxes
property given to religious, educational organisations.
SENATE
• Passed and returned to the House a bill to increase benefits
for retired teachers.
• Passed to the governor a bill allowing state institutions to
buy liability insurance on atomic reactors.
• Passed to the House measures to make San Angelo Junior j
- College a four-year institution; and remove ceiling on state old
age assistance payments.
THE GOVERNOR
• Signed Memorial resolution for Dr Walter Prescott Webb;
resolution providing for appointment of poet laureate bills;
establishing a fishing pier across Copano Bay; relating to fish-
ing in Val Verde County: changing terms of office of junior
college regents; and relating to game west of the Pecos River.
