ever, the sun was becoming strong-
er. On the morning of March 20,
1944, he tentatively put a hand
above the ground to let the warmth
of the sun melt the snow he was
holding. It was seen immediately.
Armed soldiers surrounded him.
The words he heard were, “Ah,
here are the bandits. Get ready
to shoot.” But the soldiers turned
out to be Russian allies. Libera-
tion had come to the village on
March 16. The family, buried in
the ground, had not known it.
Sarah could not stand upright
for months, she was so used to
crouching. She talked only in
whispers. A year passed before
she gave up the habit of constant-
ly looking over her shoulder to
see if any one was following. And
when she saw a chair in the DP
Camp, she asked her mother what
it was.
All that is passed now. U.S.N.A.
lends a hand. Sarah and her
parents are being taken care of
at the Reception Center main-
tained by United Service for New
Americans, largest welfare agency
serving immigrants in America
and a constituent agency of the
United Jewish Appeal. United
Service is looking for an apart-
ment for the family. Mr. Lu-
bianker, still recovering from
the effects of the years of suffer-
ing and deprivation, will be going -
