wings and the thunderbolts of the gods
themselves, we bring to their use the
mentality of savages, or madmen, or
robots.
: "What a glorious blessing science
could have been to all mankind; and
what an instrument for better acquaint-
ance, always the precursor of better
relations and thus of peace! The air-
plane, alone, not to mention radio,
should have placed man not on the
slope but the towering crest of Mount
Olympus. What purpose is it used for?
To drop bombs, this very hour, upon
defenseless men, women and little chil-
dren. To drop bombs that shatter and
choke and burn and poison and dismem-
ber even the toddler at its mother's
knee.
"This much seems sure as, standing
shocked and appalled at the terrible
thing which is taking place, we cast
back over the history of sixty centuries:
No trumpets of glory, no material prog-
ress can bring comfort to the soul of
man. It is this fact, more wonderful
than any science has yet revealed, which
gives us, even now, hope for the future.
"As the world listens and prays this
night, once more the choice is offered be-
tween the Blessing and the Cursing.
Never was the answer to be given
harder to foretell."
The allusion is to the challenge which
Moses gave to the people as he was
about to depart this life. He said: "I
call heaven and earth to record this day
against you, that I have set before you
life and death, blessing and cursing."
And his advice to them was: "Choose
life." (Deut. 30:19).
The Lord Jesus Christ said: "I am
the Life." (John 14:6). Choose Him and
you choose Life! "He that hath the Son
hath life; and he that hath not the Son
of God hath not life." "Choose ye this
day."
Lamb Chops Save
Terrier's Life
By ToM M. OLSON
Several nicely done lamb chops, the
philosophy of a dog lover and the sweat
of a couple of diggers resulted in the
rescue of a fox terrier from a sewerpipe in Kansas City - after the fire
department had given up the job.
"I'll give you $25 if you get that dog
out of there," Victor Speas, who lives
near the scene, told Fred Clopton, a
houseman. Clopton and several helpers
dug down to where the sewer pipe
branched into a number of directions.
Using a string and lamb chops -
provided by Speas - Clopton "fished" in
the various openings. Soon he got a
"bite" in one of them. After a little
more fishing, the dog emerged trailing
the last chop. He had been imprisoned
more than two days and was exhausted.
So it cost Mr. Speas $25 plus the sev-
eral nicely done lamb chops to save the
fox terrier!
It cost a whole Lamb-the Lamb of
God - to save man who has fallen into
the quagmire of sin, from the righteous
judgment of a sin-hating God.
That Lamb was freely provided! No
one had ever asked or even thought of
asking for such a sacrifice! But He was
"foreordained before the foundation of
the world, but was manifest in these last
times for you, who by Him do believe
in God, that raised Him up from the
dead, and gave Him glory; that your
faith and hope might be in God." (I Pet.
1:20-21).
That holy, spotless Lamb of God was
made sin for us; and was slain on Cal-
vary's Cross; but rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures.
Now faith and hope must be placed
in Him. Those who do put their confi-
dence in Him will never have occasion
to regret it but will always be able to
heartily say to Him: "Thou art worthy
. . . for thou wast slain, and hast re-
deemed us to God by Thy blood." (Rev.
5:9).
