President Turns Joke
Into Gala Event
Anna Sklepovich, of Gary, W. Va.,
who celebrates her birthday on the same
day as President Roosevelt, decided this
year as she approached her thirteenth
birthday to write a letter of congratula-
tion to the President.
She received a reply on White House
stationery. The letter was signed by the
President. There was also a postscript
on the letter inviting her to visit the
President.
Her letter had been opened by her
brother and he had added the postscript
as a joke. But Anna and her parents did
not know this. They took the invitation
seriously and Ann left for Washington,
D. C.
Upon her arrival Ann learned that the
postscript was a joke and tearfully she
was taken to the Women's bureau of the
Police department.
News of Ann's bitter disappointment
reached George Allen, local chairman of
the President's birthday celebrations, and
he promptly invited her to attend the
birthday celebrations as his special
guest. He would even see to it that she
had a proper dress for the occasion.
Then Mr. Roosevelt heard about her
and sent word he wished to see her just
before noon. She was escorted to the
President's office. No mistake this time!
Five minutes later she emerged with
her face wreathed in smiles. She said
that she and Mr. Roosevelt exchanged
birthday greetings.
"The President was glad to see me,"
she related, "and said I had a big joke
on my family."
In a coach drawn by a 120-horsepower
motor, she rode in state to the various
birthday celebrations in honor of Mr.
Roosevelt and was introduced to celebri-
ties. A motorcycle escort was hers for
the asking and she queened it over a
suite in the town's ritziest hotel. For two
days Ann reigned as queen in a world
of dreams come true.
The Lord does more than turn a joke
into a gala event. He even turns a curse
into a blessing!
When the Israelites were in the plains
of Moab on their way to Canaan, Balak
the king sent for Balaam to come and
curse them-for which he was to receive
great wealth and high honor.
King Balak made several attempts to
have Balaam curse Israel (see Numbers, chapters 22, 23, and 24) but each time
"God turned the curse into a blessing"
(Neh. 13:2). And Balak cried in desper-
ation: "I called thee to curse mine ene-
mies and, behold, thou hast blessed them
these three times" (Num. 24:10).
The Lord continues to turn a curse
into a blessing. In Gal. 3:10 the Word
says: "For as many as are of the works
of the law are under the curse: for it
is written, Cursed is every one that con-
tinueth not in all things which are writ-
ten in the book of the law to do them."
And following that is the good news that
"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of
the law, being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth
on a tree" (Gal. 3:13).
His vicarious death on the tree at Cal-
vary is the price paid to righteously turn
the curse of a broken law into the bless-
ing of the "redemption which is in Christ
Jesus !"
The President's personal invitation
took Ann Sklepovich from the Women's
bureau of the Police Department to a
suite in Washington's finest hotel and to
the White House itself and into the pres-
ence of the President! It provided her
a suitable dress, a police escort and
whatever she wanted to eat.
The Savior's personal invitation pro-
vides forgiveness of sins, deliverance
from judgment, life everlasting, rest,
peace, garments of salvation, the robe
of righteousness, spiritual food, the es-
cort of the Holy Spirit, entrance to the
Father's house with its many mansions
and His own immediate presence!
Have you heard and responded to the
invitation: "Come unto Me, all ye that
labor and are heavy laden and I will
give you rest"? (Matt. 11:28).
No National Anthem
Of Peace
"It is curious," says Benjamin de Cas-
seres in his March of Events column, "that
there is no national anthem of peace.
All the anthems sing of war, conquest,
military glory, revolution-except one."
The first line of "La Marseillaise" is:
"Ye sons of France awake to glory!"
The first line of "Deutschland Uber
Alles" is: "Deutschland, Deutschland,
above everything!"
The first line of the "Storm Troopers'
Song" is: "The rotten bones of the world
tremble."
The first line of Italy's "Giovanezza"
