Temple, Texas, Sept: -11.—That the
Santa Fe Railway company intends to
greatly enlarge its shop facilities at
this point is made evident by the ap-
propriation recently made for providing
additional machinery and tools at Tem-
ple, the sum of >41,000 being set aside
for that purpose, while only >4000 is
provided for the same purpose at the
general shops in Cleburne. The Tem-
ple appropriation is the iargeet made
for any point in Texas. The sum of
>16,000 will be spent in erecting a via-
duct at Belton. The natural Increase
of business that will result from the
opening of the California cutoff and
the building of new lines in west Texas,
for all of which Temple forms a base
of operation, is responsible for the en-
largements. •

that the supporters of Colonel Roose-
velt had carried the Schenectady coun-
ty republican convention and had in-
structed its delegates to the state con-
vention to support Colonel Roosevelt
for temporary chairman and to favor
direct primaries.
Schenectady and Albany counties
comprise the Twenty-third congres-
sional district, which is represented on
the republican state committee by
William Barnes, Jr., one of the most
aggressive of the old guard leaders,
and hitherto regarded as invincible.
Yesterday's defeat at the primaries
of Vice President Sherman, the old
guard candidate for temporary chair-
man of the state convention, in his
home district in Oneida county, was
not altogether unexpected, but the loss
of Schenectady county today was a
surprise even to the progressives here.
“It is an interesting straw showing
which way the sentiment in New York
state is going," said Lloyd C. Oris com,
leader of the Roosevelt forces, tonight.
Timothy I. Woodruff, chairman of
the republican state committee, ex-
pressed surprise at the action of the
Schenectady convention, inasmuch as

Root's name would elminate in the con-
vention the differences of the Roose-
velt-Sherman factions and he urges
