The cattle market this past week showed
signs of getting stronger as most classes of cattle
: had a.little more activity among them.
Lightweight stocker calves weighing between
150 lbs. to 300 lbs. remained steady, bringing
$160.00 to $220.00 per head. The market for
good stocker bulls remained good with most
bringing between $.54 to $.63 per pound.
Good quality stocker cows were in strong
demand last Saturday, with most selling for
$425.00 to $650.00 per head.
i ■ We had several good quality cow and calf
E: pairs with buyers buying strong; most bringing
2: between $600.00 to $675.00 per pair.
Fat Steen selling by the pound showed a
L little increase in price with most bringing $.75
to $.90 per pound.
Fat Heifers remained steady bringing between
* $.65 to $.70 per pound.
The Baby Calf market was real strong with
5 most calves bringing between $70.00 to $150.00

1981 Conservation
Essay Winners
Winners in the 1981 Conservation Essay Contest
have been announced by Robert A. King, Chairman
of Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation
District. The subject for this year’s contest was,
“Conservation ■> Our Best Insurance", with up to
300 words permitted in each essay.
Judging was done in three groups. — Grades
Seven and Eight; Grades Nine and Ten; and
Grades Eleven and Twelve — with three places
being awarded in each group.
Winners in Grades Seven and Eight are: First
Place, Karey Keith, Grandview Junior High;
Second, Shelley Doss, Grandview Junior High;
Third, Mandy Powell, Grandview Junior High.
Honorable mention in this group was given to
Wendy Anz, Steven Bradbury- and Lynn Williams,
all from Cleburne Junior High; Monica Marie
Morgan, Rio Vista; and Leisel Dowling, Grandview
Junior High. —
/ Winners in Grades Nine and Ten are: First
Place, Cari Pollock; Second, Chris Mitchell; and
Third, Daphne Matthews, all from Grandview High
School. Honorable Mention goes to Tim Corley,
Joshua High; Clinton E. Oliver, Cleburne High; and
Chuck Davis, Grandview High
in Grades Eleven and Twelve Danny Richardson,
Cleburne High School, won First Place; Jerry
Jackson, Cleburne High, Second; and Amy
Livingstone, Grandview 4-H Club, Third. Honorable j
Mention was given to Scott Banks, Rio Vista High;
Rebecca Johnson, Cleburne High; and Terry Moore,
Gloria McHenry, vTracie Johnston and David Wood,
all from Grandview High
The essay of.Panay Richardson was named
District Chapion and will be sept to the State Soil t
and Water Conservation Board’ for selection "of
Regional Winners.
In the District Contest a cash award of / $40.00 I
will go to First Place Winners in each group; 1
$30.00, Second Place; and $20.00, Third Place. The I
District Champion will also receive a plaque.
Twenty-three entries in the contest were received I
from Cleburne High, Cleburne Jr. High, Grandview
(High, Gfhndview Jr. High, Rio Vista Middle, Rio ,
i Vista High and Joshua High Schools.

First Place in Grade Six went to Andrea Easdon,
