. Sunday is Father’s Day. As a father for over
40 years and a grandfather for over 20 years
and approaching great grand-fatherhood, I feel
qualified to comment on the subject. Personally
I think it is great that a day has been dedicated
to Dads. I accept all the accolades that come
my way even though some of them are
underserved.
Fathers generally enter the fraternity totally
unprepared for the role. Some learn quickly
that they have assumed an awesome responsi-
bility and respond accordingly. Others never
learn what their responsibilities as a father are
or if they suspect, they abdicate them.
What do I think a father should be? Since
children are such mimics, the father should be a
good example. It is his responsibility to lead the
family in worship. He teaches his children to
pray by praying with .them and for them. He
teaches them honesty, by always being honest
with them and with everyone else. He teaches
them to be industrious by taking care of his jobs
both at home and away from home. He teaches
them to love by letting his love for them and
for their mother show. He doesn’t stop just
.' with hugging them, he also hugs his wife. To
teach your child self control, you exercise self
control. Have you ever noticed that parents
who lose their tempers have children who can’t
control their tempers. Their dogs are generally
mean too!
Being a successful father is a demanding job.
The only preparation is on the job training. The
monetary rewards are not too hot, but the
mental wages are unbeatable.
On or about Father’s Day I will hear from my
five kids. We haven’t always agreed, but when I
have been wrong, they have always understood.
But the most gratifying thing is that I don’t
have to wait for a special day to know that they
love me.

Watering is one of the . --:=A$.
most basic practices in 525-.
maintaining a home lawn,-*--’}.. _
The most inexpensive
utility is the one that
supplies water. Safe, clean
drinking water costs an av-
erage of a penny for ten gal-
lons across the country.
The American Water Works
Association points out that
water itself is free. What
you get billed for is the cost
of gathering, treating, stor-
ing and distributing it. But
what a bargain it is.
I had a dream. As a
student in F.F.A. I
dreamed I could pay
for a Farm with an
efficient Dairy
operation.
Recently I received
a news letter from a
land grant university
suggesting that we need
legislation to discour-
age investment in land,
equipment, and cattle
in dairy farming. If
passed, this legislation
would force out of
dairying many young
families and demolish
the dreams of others.
Increased production
has been encouraged
in the recent past by
financial and educa-
tional institutions alike.
After years of en-
couragement, we now
need legislation to help
this vital industry to
align itself with the
-changing market.
Losing the family
farm will set off a
chain reaction that
will spread from rural
to urban America.
I hope my congress-
man will support legis-
lation the dairy families
need or am I still
dreaming?
Sincerely,
Jerry Willis ,
