Rep. Bruce Gibson, D-Godley, announced
Monday his candidacy for re-election to the
Texas House of Representatives from District 58.
During the regular session of the 68th Legisla-
ture, Gibson sponsored the brucellosis control
bill which was adopted by the House but de-
feated in the Senate. The measure, later passed
during a special session, saved the Texas cattle
industry an estimated $100 million by averting
a threatened federal quarantine.
A major ethics bill which closed a loophole in
the state election law by requiring timely report-
ing of last-miniute campaign contributions was
sponsored and passed by Gibson. Special interest
groups had used the loophole to circumvent the
letter and intent of the law by funneling hundreds
of thousands of dollars into political campaigns
which were not disclosed until after the election.
Gibson also pushed for major reforms in the
manner in which utilities in Texas are regulated,
including a proposal to elect members of the
Public Utility Commission.
The 68th legislative session was a successful
’ one for the 58th district, according to Gibson.

counties, and feel my membership on the Sunset
Advisory Commission, the executive board of
the House Study Group, and as chairman of the
interim committee to study the state’s role in
the development and attraction of higher
technology industry to Texas will allow me to
play a larger leadership role in the 69th Legis-
la tore,” Gibson stated.
Gibson, who is seeking his third two-term as
representative, is a licensed attorney and

Cleburne and improvements to CR 600 between
Burleson and Alvarado,” he added.
Looking ahead to the major issues still unre-
solved, Gibson said he expects higher teacher
salaries to be among the recommendations of the
Select Committee on Public Education. The
committee will present its final report to the
68th Legislature in May prior to an anticipated
special session this summer. *
Gibson, who backed efforts to raise the legal
drinking age to 21 and to ban open alcohol con-
tainers in autos, said he also expects these two
issues to resurface during the 69th Legislature.
