flWho is this Jesus?n
Jesus is so influencial in this world, one might wonder, who is he?
The book of Hebrews is written primarily to answer this question. The
Holy Spirit through Paul affirms the greatness of Jesus of Nazareth by
stating that He possessed “equality with God". (Phil. 2:6 NIV) and that
He has “the name that is above every name.” (Phil. 2.9 NIV)
Now this paves the way for our seeing just who He really is. If you
want to grasp the greatness of Jesus read and study the book of
Hebrews closely. Here, I want to point to a few statements found in
the inspired book.
One of the first things the Holy Spirit points out, is that Jesus is
God’s spokesman or prophet (Heb. 1:2 NIV). This is affirmed by the Ho-
ly Spirit’s earlier statements (Dt. 18:18-20; Acts 3:22-23). Among other
things said of His Son In Hebrews chapter one is that He is the "exact
representative" (image) of God’s being, (v.3). He "provided purification
for sins" (v. 3- Saviour). God's Son is a divine king, "Your throne, O
God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter
of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated
wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your compa-
mons by anointing you with the oil of joy." (v. 8-9 NIV)
The second chapter of Hebrews continues with this great theme
with at least too beautiful ideas about Jesus. The first is seen in verse
nine, “But we see Jesus, who.. .by the grace of God he might taste
death for everyone.” Jesus is declared to be “God's grace” in action!
Then finally (in this lesson) the Holy Spirit tells us (Heb. 2:17-18 NIV)
that Jesus is "a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, aKa7
that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he
himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help, those who
are being tempted.” Now doesn't that strike a nerve? He is able to help -
you and me! This is reaffirmed in (Heb. 4:16NIV) “.. .That we may
receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Among the many great things that may be said of Jesus, one of the
most exciting things is that He is my helper and yours! He helps us to
go to our Father!
